Plot

Prologue

Then the action is transferred back 15 years (winter 1996). SAS operatives Lieutenant Price and Captain McMillan infiltrate Pripyat, bypassing terrorist patrols, and take up position on the top floor of the Polesie Hotel (Ukrainian: Polissia). The terrorists, with the support of corrupt officials, are planning to remove fuel rods from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to create nuclear weapons. The task of the SAS fighters is to kill the leader of the terrorists, Imran Zakhaev, who will participate in the meeting of the terrorists near the hotel three days after the arrival of the operatives (you can count it in the loading video). At the decisive moment, Price fires a shot at Zakhaev, but the bullet, changing direction, hits Zakhaev in the arm, tearing it off. The SAS fighters have to run away from the pursuit, during which Price shoots down the helicopter, but the crashed helicopter blades injure MacMillan, and because of this, Price will drag the captain almost all the way to the Ferris wheel. Eventually the heroes are picked up by an SAS helicopter and manage to escape Pripyat.

The action then returns back to 2011. Price's detachment holds a position in the village where Khaled al-Assad was hiding, they are attacked by a superior force of ultra-nationalists. But a helicopter arrived in time to take them away, and the detachment manages to escape.

Now that it has become known that Zakhaev survived and is involved in the ongoing events, Price's squad is tasked with finding him and eliminating him. To do this, they must capture his son Viktor, the leader of the ultranationalists in southern Russia. However, when his convoy is attacked by the SAS with the support of marines US and loyalists, Victor tries to escape. The SAS and Marines pursue him while suppressing the attacks of the militants. In the end, he reaches a dead end on the roof of the house, and Price's squad overtakes him. However, in order not to be captured, Victor shoots himself in the head, after saying the phrase: “You will die soon anyway ...”

Act III

After the death of his son, Zakhaev presents an ultimatum to the West. If Western troops do not immediately leave Russian territory, Zakhaev will strike the United States with nuclear weapons. US troops and the SAS find out that Imran Zakhaev is at a base in Altai, where the nuclear warheads threatened by the separatist leader are also stored. They decide to go to Altai and take over this base by taking control of the nuclear missiles. During the landing in Altai, the parachute of an American soldier Staff Sergeant Griggs is blown away from the detachment and he is taken prisoner by militants. Price and a squad free him and advance towards the base, destroying all patrols in their path. But, when the detachments have almost penetrated the base, the ultra-nationalists launch nuclear missiles towards the United States. There is very little time until they reach America, and besides, the missile flight path passes north of Europe, far from missile defense systems, and, in any case, there is no way to shoot them down. The SAS and American soldiers attack the ultra-nationalist base. When the Americans manage to infiltrate the control center, Price tells Soap: Soap enter the codes we will delay their reinforcements. Soap, by entering the cancel codes, destroys the missiles in the air. Zakhaev throws all the remaining soldiers into an attack on the Americans and the British. The detachments capture UAZ vehicles and try to get away from the detachment of Russian ultra-nationalists pursuing them and get to the evacuation point. But the bridge, on which the UAZs were supposed to pass, blows up the Mi-24 helicopter, and it is no longer possible to cross it.

Price and Griggs' squads are trapped: on a collapsing bridge, they try to hide from the attacking squads behind fallen cars. At that moment, a damaged fuel truck explodes next to them. Soap, having come to his senses, sees that most of the soldiers of his squad are dead, and Griggs, shooting back, tries to drag McTavish away from the burning cars, but dies from a wound in the head. At that moment, Zakhaev himself appears, accompanied by two terrorists. They enter the bridge and kill the surviving SAS and Marines, Zakhaev himself finishing off Gus with a headshot. Suddenly, Mi-28N helicopters of Komarov's loyalists fly up and save Price and Soap from death, diverting the attention of Zakhaev and his people, who open fire on the helicopters. At that moment, Price, lying a little way from Soap MacTavish, throws his gun at MacTavish, and MacTavish kills Zakhaev and his guards. Komarov rescues Soap and the helicopter transports him to the hospital. The last thing Soap sees before passing out is Price lying motionless while a Loyalist medic gives him chest compressions. After a few chest presses, the soldier swings and punches Price several times in the chest, which looks rather strange. However, this technique refers to first aid for cardiac arrest (see precordial stroke), although it is not very reliable.

In the epilogue (after the credits), SAS fighters, whose identities are not specified, rescue an important person from the hands of terrorists on board the plane. One of them fastens the rescued hostage to him, and then they leave the plane, jumping with parachutes, while the plane, which had a bomb near the corpse of one of the dead passengers, explodes in the air.

In these modes, the game continues until one of the teams wins the specified number of rounds.

Weapons and class system

Weapons in multiplayer mode are divided into primary and secondary. The main one includes five types and determines the character class (sets appearance and characteristics such as sprint range, general mobility). The secondary includes pistols, grenade launchers, explosives, mines and grenades.

Player classes

The game has 5 standard classes and 5 custom classes (giving you a choice of weapons, accessories and perks). Access to classes, the ability to edit them, as well as access to various types weapons, perks, etc. does not appear immediately, but gradually, as experience points are gained ( XP points).

The standard classes are:

  • Stormtrooper (Assault) - M16A4 submachine gun with an underbarrel grenade launcher, M-9 pistol, fragmentation grenade, stun grenade;
  • Saboteur (Spec Ops) - MP5 submachine gun, USP 0.45 pistol with a silencer, explosives, fragmentation grenade, flash grenade;
  • Machine gunner (machine gunner) - M249 SAW machine gun, USP 0.45 pistol, fragmentation grenade, 3 stun grenades;
  • Demoman (Demolisher) - Winchester 1200 shotgun, M-9 pistol, RPG-7, fragmentation grenade, smoke grenade;
  • Sniper (Sniper) - sniper rifle M40A3, silenced M-9 pistol, frag grenade, 3 flash grenades.

Character development system and game statistics

A character for multiplayer is created on a computer connected to the Internet, but is not tied to a GUID. There are five developer-created classes to choose from, and five variants with customizable weapons and equipment. The development system involves promotion from the 1st to the 55th level. On the first one, only the first three classes created by the developers are available. After receiving the first levels, two more standard classes are opened, and starting from the fourth level, it becomes possible to create your own class. When playing on a server with a professional game mod (for example, PAM4 or ProMod), there is no class system and character development. The entire arsenal of weapons is immediately available to the player (with the exception of samples that were removed by the creators of the mod).

System of awards and encouragement

Character rewards and promotions are displayed in separate lists in several categories. Rewards are given for various actions on the battlefield; rewards are given for participating in the game and winning the player's team in rounds and on the map and allow you to quickly grow in ranks, gaining access to perks and new types of weapons. For the effective use of a particular weapon model, opportunities for its modernization are provided: for the total number of kills, “weapon modules” become available, and for a certain number of headshot kills, bonus types of masking colors open. Upon reaching top level possession of any class of weapons, the player gets access to the "golden" weapons of the corresponding class.

air support

An active role in the gameplay is played by the ability to use aviation support. So, making three kills in a row without one's own death allows you to call an unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, which displays the location of opponents on the radar for 30 seconds, five kills in a row - "air strike", a series of seven kills - a helicopter. Only one air strike can be made at a time and only one helicopter can be on the map. The ability to call aviation remains even after death.

Perks

The system of perks, or personal features, is no less influential on the gameplay. Access to perks opens gradually upon reaching the appropriate level-title. All perks are divided into three groups - "blue", "red" and "green", when creating your own class, you can choose one perk from each group.

  • Perks of the blue group - are responsible for weapons. Unavailable when using some weapon modules.
  • Red group perks - modify the player's attacking or defensive abilities.
  • Perks of the green group - change the physical capabilities of a fighter. The same group includes the perks "Last Shot" and "Martyr", which make it possible to "get" the enemy with a pistol or grenade upon death.

When playing on a server with specialized "professional" mods (PAM4 or ProMod), along with other restrictions, the player is given the "Bandolier" and "Power Shot" perks by default, which cannot be removed, and the third perk ("green" group) is usually turns off.

Internet competitions

Quickly gaining popularity among online players, the game attracted many teams to participate in the semi-professional and professional level of cyber competitions. For the game, specialized mods are usually used, for example PAM4, ProMod, ProMod Live. RCGL and ClanBase host regular CoD4 competitions in several dozen categories, the most popular formats are Search & Destroy (Search and Destroy) duel, 2x2, 3x3 and 5x5. There are already many professional CoD4 teams playing in various world tournaments. Among the most popular are the Swedish fnatic .MSI, Power Gaming, Team Dignitas. Among the most popular Russian teams are Team EMPIRE, ROX.KIS, as well as regular championships based on ProMod Live mods. Regular Russian PROCOD,, BEFIRST SERIES are popular in the CIS. In addition, CoD4 competitions are included in the ASUS Open.

Development

Call of Duty 4 was developed by a team of one hundred people over the course of two years. After Call of Duty 2 the Infinity Ward team decided to move away from the World War II setting used in previous games in the series. This led to three game concepts, ultimately embodied in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and its subsequent sequels: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

When writing the plot, the developers tried to avoid references to real-life (including in the modern period) wars, keeping within the framework of the general theme of confrontation between two equal parties. In order to provide a more realistic tone to the game, the developers attended an exercise at the Tuentine Palms military base; the effects of being near the Abrams tank while firing the latter were reproduced in the game based on these visits. The developers also communicated with combatants from among the Marines in order to convey as closely as possible within the game reality the sensations and emotions on the battlefield. Veterans were also invited to record a mocap and develop AI.

Sound

Music to Modern Warfare mostly written by a British composer Stephen Barton, previously collaborated with Harry Gregson-Williams; the latter was the author of the main musical theme of the game. Several tracks from the game are available on the 7 Days Modern Warfare" (eng. 7 Days of Modern Warfare) created by Infinity Ward; some tracks are available for listening on Barton's personal website. The closing track, which plays during the game's credits, is accompanied by a recitative performed by the game's lead animator, Mark Grigsby.

Plot

A Russian ultra-nationalist named Imran Zakhaev dreams of seizing power in Russia and annexing new territories to it. Zakhaev knows the US will never let that happen, so he is funding a Middle East coup orchestrated by his ally Khaled al-Assad to divert world attention from Russia. While the war is going on in the Middle East, Zakhaev starts a civil war in Russia in order to seize power. However, US and British intelligence uncover Zakhaev's plans and send their troops to both regions. The beginning of the game takes place at the Credenhill military base in the UK, where the fighters of the detachment of Captain John Price, joined by a newcomer, namely John "Soap" MacTavish, are preparing for a landing operation.

The story is told from the perspective of British SAS operatives Sergeant "Soap" McTavish and Captain (on two missions - Lieutenant) Price, an unnamed AC-130 Specter bomber operator and an unknown OTG-141 fighter (in the epilogue), US Marine Sergeant Paul Jackson and the President unnamed Middle Eastern state of Yasser al-Fulani.

A Russian ultra-nationalist named Imran Zakhaev dreams of seizing power in Russia and annexing new territories to it. Zakhaev knows the US will never allow this to happen, so he finances a coup in the Middle East orchestrated by his ally Khaled al-Assad to divert the attention of the world from Russia. While the war is going on in the Middle East, Zakhaev starts a civil war in Russia in order to seize power. However, US and British intelligence uncover Zakhaev's plans and send their troops to both regions. The beginning of the game takes place in the town of Credenhill in the UK, where the fighters of the detachment of Captain Price, joined by a newcomer, namely John "Soap" MacTavish, are preparing for a landing operation.

The story is told from the perspective of British SAS operatives Sergeant "Soap" McTavish and Captain (on two missions - Lieutenant) Price, an unnamed AC-130 Specter bomber operator and an unknown OTG-141 fighter (in the epilogue), US Marine Sergeant Paul Jackson and the President unnamed Middle Eastern state (according to the map shown when loading, this is Saudi Arabia) Yasser al-Fulani.

Soap MacTavish, as part of Captain Price's SAS squad, infiltrates a terrorist ship in the Bering Strait. The detachment storms the ship. In the hold, one of the containers found a box with unknown contents and documents in Arabic. However, it is not possible to find out what is in the box, since the ship is attacked by two fighters, presumably Russian. The ship begins to sink and the squad barely manages to leave it in the SAS helicopter. Next, Khaled al-Assad seizes power in the Middle East and assassinates President al-Fulani live on the central channel. Captain Price's detachment is sent to Russia to rescue a British intelligence informant codenamed Nikolai from captivity, working double agent among Russian ultranationalists. With the help of a detachment of Russian special forces under the command of Sergeant Komarov, they storm the terrorist camp and rescue Nikolai, then evacuate by SAS helicopter.

The helicopter fails to leave the territory under the control of the rebels, it is shot down by the rebel air defense systems. The survivors of the crash (including Nikolai, Gus, Soap, and Price) manage to contact the base and then have to make their way through enemy territory to the evacuation site. After some time, the AC-130, sent by the Western troops, begins to accompany the heroes and help them, destroying the enemy troops. They eventually manage to reach the evacuation site and leave enemy territory safely. Meanwhile, the US launches a massive invasion of the Middle East to overthrow the al-Assad regime. The US Marine Corps is rapidly advancing across the region. In these battles, Sergeant Paul Jackson participates with his detachment of Marines. In the end, the US army attacks the capital of an unnamed state in the region, however, apparently, it is Saudi Arabia. Large-scale battles are going on in the city. But the Marines infiltrated the palace and discover a nuclear weapon there. A bomb threat is announced, and American troops begin to rush out of the city. However, the AH-1 Cobra helicopter escorting the transport helicopter with Jackson's squad on board is shot down, and the squad, realizing that they may not have time to leave the city before the explosion, makes a desperate attempt to save the surviving helicopter pilot (the co-pilot dies in the fall). They succeed, sitting nearby, making their way to the crash site and rescuing the pilot (Jackson carries him). Then, in in full force, the squad again boards the helicopter and it begins to rapidly leave the combat zone. There is a nuclear explosion, and along with other American troops who did not have time to leave the city in time, they are covered by an explosive wave. Jackson's squad is completely killed. Jackson himself manages to survive after the crash, but, having got out of the remains of the helicopter, he dies from his wounds and, possibly, due to radiation, and the capital is almost completely destroyed by a nuclear explosion. However, the war is won and al-Assad's regime is overthrown.

Captain Price's detachment goes to Azerbaijan and takes by storm, with the support of a Russian helicopter mi-28, the village where al-Assad is believed to be hiding. They manage to destroy all the terrorists and capture al-Assad. Price interrogates al-Assad. Suddenly, al-Assad's cell phone rings and Price, picking up the phone, recognizes the voice of the caller. This is Zakhaev. Price then kills al-Assad with a headshot. The action then moves back 15 years. SAS operatives Lieutenant Price and Captain McMillan infiltrate Pripyat, bypassing terrorist patrols, and take up position on the top floor of the Polissia Hotel. The terrorists, with the support of corrupt officials, are planning to try to withdraw materials for the creation of nuclear weapons from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The task of the SAS fighters is to kill the leader of the terrorists, Imran Zakhaev, who will participate in the meeting of the terrorists in front of the hotel the next day. At the decisive moment, Price shoots at Zakhaev, but he fails to kill him, but with a shot he shoots off Zakhaev's hand. Having given themselves away, the SAS fighters have to flee, while the terrorists attack them and follow on their heels. In the end, the heroes are picked up by an SAS helicopter and they manage to leave Pripyat. The action then returns to the present. Price's detachment holds a position in the village where Khaled al-Assad was hiding, they are attacked by a superior force of ultra-nationalists. But in time, an American helicopter arrived in time to take them away and the detachment manages to escape. Further, American and British troops are involved in the battles in Russia and help the Russian army fight the ultra-nationalists, they decide to catch Imran Zakhaev's son, Viktor Zakhaev, so that he can lead them to his father. Price's squad ambushes Viktor Zakhaev, the leader of the ultra-nationalists in southern Russia. However, when his convoy is attacked by the SAS, Victor tries to escape. The SAS fighters pursue him while suppressing the attacks of the militants. In the end, he reaches a dead end on the roof of the house and is overtaken by Price's squad. However, in order not to be captured, Victor shoots himself and dies, having previously said the phrase: “You will die soon anyway” ...

After the death of his son, Zakhaev presents an ultimatum to the West. If Western troops do not immediately leave Russian territory, Zakhaev will strike the United States with nuclear weapons. US troops and SAS find out that Imran Zakhaev is at a base in Altai, where the nuclear warheads that Zakhaev threatens are also stored. They decide to go to Altai and capture this base by taking control of nuclear missiles. While landing in Altai, an American soldier, Staff Sergeant Griggs, is parachuted away from the detachment and is taken prisoner by ultranationalists. Price and his squad free him and advance towards the base, destroying all patrols in their path. But, when the detachments of Price and Griggs have already practically penetrated the base, the ultra-nationalists launch nuclear missiles at the United States. There is very little time until they reach America, besides, the trajectory of the missiles passes north of Europe, far from missile defense systems, and, in any case, there is no way to shoot them all down. SAS fighters and American soldiers attack the base of the ultra-nationalists. They manage to infiltrate the control center and enter codes that destroy missiles while still in the air. However, thirsting for revenge, Zakhaev throws all his remaining strength on the heroes. Forces of Price and Griggs seize trucks and try to get away from the numerous ultra-nationalists chasing them and get to the evacuation point. But the bridge over which the trucks were supposed to pass blows up the helicopter, and it is no longer possible to cross it. Price and Griggs' units are trapped. Almost all members of the detachments, including Griggs, perish under the fire of ultranationalists. Soap and Captain Price manage to survive, but are seriously injured. Zakhaev himself appears, accompanied by two terrorists, walks across the bridge and finishes off Gus and the wounded SAS fighters. Suddenly, Russian army helicopters fly up and divert the attention of Zakhaev and his men. They open fire on the helicopter. At this moment, Price, lying at a distance from MacTavish, throws a gun to his partner, and he kills Zakhaev and his guards. After that, the forces of the Russian army arrive, who rescue Soup and transport him to the hospital. The last thing Soap sees before losing consciousness is Price lying still and the Russian medic trying unsuccessfully to get his heart to beat again.

Weapons and class system

Weapons in multiplayer mode are divided into primary and secondary. The main one includes five types and determines the class of the character (sets the appearance and characteristics such as sprint range, general mobility). The secondary includes pistols, grenade launchers, explosives, mines and grenades.

Main weapon

Secondary weapon

explosives

  • grenades - by default, the player carries one fragmentation an offensive grenade and one of the three "special" grenades - light, noise or smoke. Using perks you can increase the number of fragmentation or special grenades to three, while all special grenades will be the same and cannot be smoke;
  • Claymore - directional anti-personnel mine;
  • C4 - plastic explosive with a radio detonator;
  • RPG-7 - Soviet reusable anti-tank grenade launcher;

Optional equipment

Player classes

The game has 5 standard classes and 5 custom classes (giving you a choice of weapons, accessories and perks). Access to classes, the ability to edit them, as well as access to various types of weapons, perks, etc. does not appear immediately, but gradually, as experience points are gained ( XP points).

The standard classes are:

  • Stormtrooper (Assault) - automatic M16A4 with an underbarrel grenade launcher;
  • Saboteur (Spec Ops) - submachine gun MP5, explosive C-4 ;
  • Machine gunner (machine gunner) - machine gun M249 SAW, 3 stun grenades;
  • Demoman (Demolisher) - shotgun Winchester 1200 , RPG-7 ;
  • Sniper (Sniper) - sniper rifle M40A3, 3 flash grenades.

Character development system and game statistics

A character for multiplayer mode is created on a computer connected to Internet, but is not hard-coded to a GUID.

Upon reaching the highest level of proficiency in any weapon class, the player gains access to the “golden” weapon of the corresponding class.

air support

An active role in the gameplay is the ability to use aviation support.

Perks

No less influential on the gameplay system perks, or personal characteristics.

For the game, specialized mods are usually used, for example PAM4, ProMod, ProMod Live. on RCGL and clan base regular CoD4 competitions are held in several dozen categories, the most popular formats are Search & Destroy (Search and Destroy) duel, 2x2, 3x3 and 5x5. There are already many professional CoD4 teams playing in various world tournaments. Among the most popular - Swedish fnatic.MSI, Power Gaming, Team Dignitas. Among the most popular Russian teams are Team EMPIRE, ROX.KIS, as well as regular championships based on ProMod Live mods. Regular Russian PROCOD, EXPLOSIVE CUP, BEFIRST SERIES are popular in the CIS. In addition, CoD4 competitions are included in ASUS Open.

Dynamic plot single player and developed multiplayer brought the game high popularity. Thus, representatives of several Russian Internet sites considered that the game promotes Russophobia and, in particular, they were going to send a petition to Activision with a request to release a patch that removes obscene language in Russian from the game. After the release of the game, videos appeared on the Internet, allegedly showing reviews about the game. Vladimir Putin and Fidel Castro , official reviews these "jokes" were not followed.
