The Wolfenstein series of games is a great example of one of the most successful, extensive (and the Wolfenstein title has more than a dozen projects) and long-lived series in the world of video games. Multi-platform and multi-genre, although the priorities in favor of PC and FPS are clearly present here, it was the Wolfenstein line that greatly influenced the formation and further development first-person shooter genre. Plus, we should not forget about a very unusual and attractive setting that combines the theme of World War II with science fiction and rushes into an incredibly deep alternative history with mysticism and paranormalism.

In general, the Wolfenstein series clearly deserves the attention of the players, so today we will take a closer look at it, following how it all began and how it all ended.

background

Castle Wolfenstein (1981): first game in the series

For most gamers, Wolfenstein is first and foremost hurricane shooters with addictive gameplay and, if we take the latest parts of the franchise, excellent graphics and a bright intricate plot. But it didn't start with them.

Castle Wolfenstein (1981): unassuming but ingenious

The first two games, Castle Wolfenstein (1981) and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (1984), were arcade stealth action games developed by Muse Software.

Castle Wolfenstein (1981): the timer below counts down until the opening of the box, and the soldier nearby does not pay attention to the hero, because he changed into an SS uniform

In the first part, you had to play as an unnamed spy who infiltrates the Wolfenstein castle in order to steal secret documents from the Nazis.

Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (1984): when meeting, the Nazis began to demand a pass

In the continuation of Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, released in 1984, you have to play as an Allied soldier who is trying to get into Hitler's bunker and blow up the Fuhrer along with all the highest ranks of the Third Reich.

Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (1984): the graphics seem to be better, but it's hard to see the differences with the naked eye

Wolfenstein in a new way

Wolfenstein (2009): the most controversial game in the series

It's funny that almost every subsequent game in the series is a kind of reboot of the franchise: despite the common setting and the same protagonist, technically these game projects very different from each other, and the plot of the main games of the series has few points of contact, often simply ignoring the events of its predecessors.

It is the setting (with some, again, additions and changes) that is the main link in the series, and in Wolfenstein 2009 from Raven Software and id Software, it is still in place and does its job well. Although, looking ahead, we note that it was this part that received the most controversial reviews among the players due to the numerous controversial innovations in the gameplay.

Wolfenstein (2009): Wehrmacht soldier in Black Sun gear

Of course, not all changes in gameplay due to the desire of developers to bring here something qualitatively new and interesting. A significant reason for such a tangible gap between the games in the Wolfenstein series is that they are separated from each other by almost decades, during which game industry did not stand still, and many techniques and tools from the developers' arsenal became hopelessly outdated, becoming irrelevant and uninteresting. Judge for yourself: Wolfenstein 3D was released in 1992, Return to Castle Wolfenstein - in 2001, and considering Wolfenstein in this section - in 2009. And the fans of the series, even the most devoted ones, cannot be fed with the same “carrots” all the time, because sooner or later they will rebel, start calling the series a “conveyor belt” and demand changes.

In general, we rehabilitated the developers from their very controversial Wolfenstein of 2009, now let's move on to the game itself.

Wolfenstein (2009): Not all is well in Eisenstadt

The Nazis do not leave their attempts to find a way to win the war with the help of magic and the occult, and this time, using the power of mysterious artifacts, they open a portal to a parallel world, where they discover an inexhaustible and incredibly powerful source of energy. Having found out about this, the Office of Secret Operations once again sends its best operative, that is, B.J. Blaskowitz, to the city of Eisenstadt, where experiments are being carried out on the use of the "Black Sun" (this is the name the Nazis gave to the discovered energy of unknown origin), in order to stop all the ugliness that is happening here and prevent a global threat.

Wolfenstein (2009): parallel dimension

Players are greeted by a well-drawn environment and wonderful special effects, immersing them in the atmosphere of a small Austrian town of the middle of the last century, in which sinister secrets are hidden and secret military scientific experiments are being carried out. The developers also provided the player with the opportunity to step over the veil of our reality and visit another dimension, using the power of a special medallion for this.

Wolfenstein (2009): despite the heavy destruction, the city still looks amazing

Enemies in Wolfenstein became even more and among their number there were dangerous mages-sorcerers and terrible creatures of other worlds. Ordinary soldiers of the Wehrmacht, armed and equipped with the latest top-secret military developments (powerful armor and exoskeletons, jetpacks, photon guns, and so on). Well, at the conclusion of the key story events, the player will experience unforgettable boss battles, represented here by mad Nazi scientists and brutal Nazi commanders, many of whom have met in previous games in the series.

Wolfenstein (2009): the hero constantly interacts with various characters

As already mentioned, some innovations have appeared in Wolfenstein, designed to make the pestilence around the hero more lively and interactive. The city of Eisenstadt is represented here as a conditionally open location (of course, all movements outside of it are connected with the plot development) with numerous hiding places, side quests and scattered throughout the records (documents, letters, scientific reports, and so on), shedding more light on the essence of the events. The player is constantly surrounded by a large number of minor characters, leading various conversations among themselves and, again, giving the player a lot of new interesting information. Finally, the enemies in the city are constantly respawning and make Blazhkowitz more difficult to move between missions.

The game has been withdrawn from sale in official digital services.

New Order and Old Blood

wolfenstein: The New Order (2014): a planet under the yoke of Nazism

2014 was marked by another restart, which gave the series the look it is in at the moment. The MachineGames studio is responsible for this, and it should be noted right away that everything turned out just fine for her.

Literally everything has changed in the game: a fantastic setting in which the Nazis were able to conquer not only Europe, but the whole world (Wolfenstein: The new order and subsequent games unfolding in alternate world 60s); graphics and design that mixes retrofuturism and whimsical technology; finally, the staging of the plot, which turned out to be incredibly exciting, rich and in general, can rightly be considered one of the best in the world computer games over the last ten years! And let them say that in shooters, the storyline is not as important as, say, in RPG, but the process itself is much more significant (The New Order, by the way, also has complete order with it) - MachineGames very clearly proved the opposite.

Even main character changed beyond recognition: from an indestructible superhero, he became an almost tragic character, open to experiences and feelings, somehow vulnerable, even if this vulnerability is not obvious and somewhat unusual. In general, MachineGames brought interesting changes to the series, as they say, on all fronts, and unlike the previous game, their updated Wolfenstein concept was able to "shoot" in a good way. Wolfenstein: The New Order, according to many publications, became the game of the year, won a bunch of awards for the story and gameplay (who would have thought that this was possible for the “corridor jester”, a genre long buried by the ubiquitous spiteful critics), and most importantly, gave the players an unforgettable virtual adventure and pleasant emotions.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (2017): breathtaking shootouts and impressive opponents

The final game on our list, again developed by MachineGames and continuing The plot new order. An excellent shooter in all respects that adequately maintains the quality bar set by the previous part, but leaves behind not so vivid emotions: after all, we saw most of what was proposed in The New Order and The Old Blood.

At the same time, a new setting (from Europe, The New Colossus plot takes us to the USA, where the Nazis also dominate in full) new events, characters and an updated arsenal (with the ability to improve your favorite gun) cause a strong interest in the game, which after passing leaves positive impression.

With this, we conclude the story of Wolfenstein and hope that in the future the series will continue on the same path, and each of its new game will be a spectacular and exciting high-budget blockbuster with a unique and catchy story, innovative and furious gameplay, and a deep all-consuming atmosphere. Thank you for your attention!

But the occultists of the Third Reich find a solution to this problem - a parallel world. It hides an incredible dark energy that can radically change the outcome of the war. However, no one knew that controlling such a force is much more difficult than it seems ... We present to your attention another game about the evil Nazis called Wolfenstein (2009). The plot of the game tells us again about the American spy BJ Blaskowitz, who, when the Nazi battleship Tirpitz was sunk, takes possession of a mysterious medallion, an ancient civilization, which gives our hero the necessary strength to fight the fascist junta. Not having time to cope with one task, our hero is immediately thrown into another, we are assigned to go to the German city of Eisenstadt and find out what is happening there. Arriving in the city, we see that the Nazis, using ancient artifacts and conducting occult rituals, opened the doors to another dimension and received magical powers with which they improved their soldiers. As a result, the gates must be closed, and all who meet on our thorny path must be eliminated. BJ is given a fairly wide selection of weapons, both real, a rifle and a submachine gun, as well as a fantastic Tesla gun, a photon gun, etc. But main feature gameplay will be the use of a medallion, which can increase the speed, lethality of weapons, put up a shield and even slow down time. These abilities will open to the player over time after pumping. In general, the game turned out to be very exciting and dynamic; you should definitely play it!
