If you evaluate the family in which Maxim Potashev was born and raised, it will become clear why he grew up to be such an intellectually developed and erudite man.

His dad is Oscar Efimovich Potashev, candidate of technical sciences, honored worker and head of the laboratory of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Woodworking Industry with a design and technological bureau, author of an impressive list of monographs.

While still a boy, Maxim fell ill with intellectual games. At first it was a sports bridge, and then an elite club “What? Where? When?".

As soon as the program began, Maxim was glued to the screen and desperately dreamed of being in their place. Then he could not even think that this would happen more than once!

After school, Potashev headed to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Management.

After graduation, he remained at the university as a teacher, but soon abandoned this position due to loss of interest.

It should be noted that Potashev is an enthusiastic person, but quickly cools down. This can be judged by the list of positions he held throughout his life:

  • Head of the Operational Marketing Center of the Rosgosstrakh company;
  • Director of the think tank computer company Kaspersky Lab;
  • Development Director of the publishing house "Azbuka-Attik";
  • Director of the Internet agency "Result";
  • Partner of the R&P Consulting agency, whose main activity is the promotion of corporate IT systems.

Among other things, Maxim Potashev is known as a coach who conducts training seminars on team building in the company, intelligence development, decision-making technologies, marketing and sales.

If we return to Potashev as an expert in the intellectual club, then here he has his own “career”. He first came to the sports version of ChGK in 1989. Over the entire history of his game here, he managed to receive a huge amount of regalia. Among them:

  • Champion of Moscow 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2009;
  • Winner of the Russian Cup 2001, 2008 and 2011;
  • Champion of 2003 and 2011;

He joined the elite club on television in 1994 and here too it did not go unnoticed. He has the following prizes: “Crystal Owl”, “Diamond Star”, “Big Crystal Owl”.

Moreover, television viewers, as a result of a large-scale vote, recognized Potashev as the best expert in the elite club over the 25 years of its existence!

Maxim also noted himself as the organizer of the games. It is he who is the permanent president of the Association of Moscow Clubs “What? Where? When?”, as well as a member of the board and vice-president of the International Association of Clubs “What? Where? When?".

He is the holder of the title “Person of the Year” from MAK, as well as an award named after the author of the program, Vladimir Voroshilov, for services to the development of the “What? Where? When?".

Let us note that Maxim’s credits include participation in the first episode of the TV show “Brain Ring,” as well as a completely successful game in “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” paired with Alexander Valuev.

It is interesting that the expert treats losses in sports bridge, which Maxim is still “sick” with, calmly, but in ChGK he does not accept defeats. Perhaps this is what affected the results discussed above.

On this moment Maxim is married for the second time.

His wife's name is Elena Chukhraeva, she is also an expert sports version ChGK. In this union, the couple is raising a daughter, Anna.

The connoisseur’s first marriage also happened thanks to “What? Where? When?" — his wife Elena Alexandrova was his teammate.

Maxim Potashev and Elena Alexandrova divorced, but in this marriage twin boys Andrei and Roman were born.

Excerpt characterizing Potashev, Maxim Oskarovich

I just now remembered that I need to breathe... Dad stunned me so much with his behavior that I couldn’t come to my senses and kept waiting for the door to open again. Anna mortally insulted him, and I was sure that, having recovered from the attack of anger, he would definitely remember this. My poor girl!.. Her fragile, pure life hung by a thread, which could easily break at the capricious will of Caraffa...
For some time I tried not to think about anything, giving my fevered brain at least some respite. It seemed that not only Caraffa, but along with him the entire world I knew had gone crazy... including my brave daughter. Well, our lives were extended another week... Could anything have been changed? In any case, at the moment there was not a single more or less normal thought in my tired, empty head. I stopped feeling anything, I stopped even being afraid. I think this is exactly how people who went to their death felt...
Could I change anything in just seven short days, if I failed to find the “key” to Caraffa for four long years?.. In my family, no one ever believed in chance... Therefore, hope that something will unexpectedly bring salvation - that would be the child’s wish. I knew that there was nowhere to wait for help. Father clearly could not help if he offered Anna to take her essence, in case of failure... Meteora also refused... We were alone with her, and we had to help ourselves only. Therefore, I had to think, trying not to lose hope until the last moment, that in this situation it was almost beyond my strength...
The air began to thicken in the room - North appeared. I just smiled at him, without feeling any excitement or joy, because I knew that he had not come to help.
– Greetings, North! What brought you again?.. – I asked calmly.
He looked at me in surprise, as if not understanding my calmness. He probably didn’t know that there is a limit to human suffering, which is very difficult to reach... But having reached even the worst, he becomes indifferent, since there is no strength left even to be afraid...
“I’m sorry I can’t help you, Isidora.” Is there anything I can do for you?
- No, North. Can not. But I will be glad if you stay with me... I am pleased to see you - I answered sadly and after a short pause, added: - We got one week... Then Caraffa, most likely, will take our short lives. Tell me, are they really worth so little?.. Are we really going to leave as easily as Magdalene left? Is there really no one who would cleanse our world, the North, of this inhumanity?..
– I didn’t come to you to answer old questions, my friend... But I must admit - you made me change my mind a lot, Isidora... You made me see again what I had been trying hard to forget for years. And I agree with you - we are wrong... Our truth is too “narrow” and inhumane. She strangles our hearts... And we become too cold to correctly judge what is happening. Magdalene was right when she said that our Faith is dead... Just as you are right, Isidora.
I stood there, dumbfounded, staring at him, unable to believe what I was hearing!.. Was this the same proud and always right North, which did not allow any, even the slightest criticism of its great Teachers and its beloved Meteora? !!
I didn’t take my eyes off him, trying to penetrate his pure, but tightly closed from everyone, soul... What changed his centuries-old opinion?!. What prompted you to look at the world more humanely?..
“I know, I surprised you,” Sever smiled sadly. “But even the fact that I opened up to you won’t change what’s happening.” I don't know how to destroy Karaffa. But our White Magus knows this. Do you want to go to him again, Isidora?
– May I ask what changed you, Sever? – I asked carefully, not paying attention to his last question.
He thought for a moment, as if trying to answer as truthfully as possible...
– This happened a very long time ago... From the very day Magdalene died. I have not forgiven myself and all of us for her death. But our laws apparently lived too deeply in us, and I did not find the strength within myself to admit it. When you came, you vividly reminded me of everything that happened then... You are just as strong and just as giving of yourself for those who need you. You awakened in me a memory that I had been trying to kill for centuries... You revived the Golden Mary in me... I thank you for this, Isidora.
Hidden very deep, pain screamed in Sever's eyes. There was so much of it that it flooded me completely!.. And I couldn’t believe that I had finally discovered his warm, pure soul. That he was finally alive again!..
- North, what should I do? Aren't you scared that the world is ruled by such non-humans as Caraffa?..
– I have already suggested to you, Isidora, that we go again to Meteora to see the Lord... Only he can help you. Unfortunately, I can't...
For the first time, I felt his disappointment so clearly... Disappointment with my helplessness... Disappointment with the way he lived... Disappointment with his outdated TRUTH...
Apparently, a person’s heart is not always able to fight what it is accustomed to, what it has believed in all its adult life... So is the North - it could not so easily and completely change, even realizing that it was wrong. He lived for centuries, believing that he was helping people... believing that he was doing exactly what, one day, would have to save our imperfect Earth, would have to help it finally be born... He believed in goodness and in the future, despite to losses and pain that I could have avoided if I had opened my heart earlier...
But we are all, apparently, imperfect – even the North. And no matter how painful the disappointment may be, we have to live with it, correcting some old mistakes and making new ones, without which our Earthly life would not be real...
– Do you have a little time for me, Sever? I would like to know what you did not have time to tell me the last time we met. Have I tired you with my questions? If yes, tell me and I will try not to bother you. But if you agree to talk to me, you will give me a wonderful gift, since what you know, no one will tell me while I am still here on Earth...
– What about Anna?.. Don’t you prefer to spend time with her?
– I called her... But my girl is probably sleeping, because she doesn’t answer... She’s tired, I think. I don't want to disturb her peace. Therefore, talk to me, North.
He looked me sadly and knowingly in the eyes and quietly asked:
– What do you want to know, my friend? Ask - I will try to answer everything that worries you.

Elena Alexandrova is a fairly famous polymath in Russia, a player of the intellectual game “What? Where? When?". Elena Alexandrova has been performing at the elite club since 2003, and managed to sit at the table with a number of stars of this program, as she became a member of three different teams of experts.

Elena Alexandrova was born in 1975. According to one information, Elena’s hometown is Moscow, according to another - St. Petersburg. Together with Lena, the parents raised the girl’s sister, who subsequently immigrated to the United States of America, where she lives today in the city of San Francisco.

After graduating from school, Elena entered a prestigious university in the country - Moscow State University, where she received a specialty in Sociology of Mass Communications. Alexandrova managed to work in large companies, the girl was responsible for public relations, but today Elena Alexandrova is developing her own projects, and also earns money remotely through journalism and media information.

"What where When?"

Elena Alexandrova’s vivid television biography began with her entry into the club of experts. In the television intellectual game “What? Where? When?" Elena Alexandrova made her debut in 2003 in the team. The next year, Elena joined the all-female team under the command of Valentina Golubeva, but this project turned out to be short-lived, so Elena returned under the leadership of Potashev.

But Elena Alexandrova had her most striking performances in the team of one of the best captains of an elite club -. Together with Elena, famous TV quiz show masters Mikhail Moon, Alexey Kapustin, and others sat at the same table. In the new season of spring games in 2016, Elena again joined the team of her beloved captain, and all fans mind games were able to enjoy the performance of this strong and united team.

In addition to participating in intellectual club games, Alexandrova was also a popularizer of this game. Elena Alexandrova organized official quizzes among students, schoolchildren and even subscribers of the printed publication “Science and Life”. These amateur games, designed to raise interest among citizens in smart entertainment and revive the culture of acquiring knowledge, were held under the general title “Working on Mistakes.”

Personal life

Back in the early 2000s, Elena Alexandrova married her fellow expert, and later three-time winner of the Crystal Owl prize, Maxim Potashev. In 2005, the couple had twins Andrei and Roman. Maxim and Elena were, as they say, inseparable; they were considered not only a strong married couple, but also played for the same team of Andrei Kozlov for many years. Moreover, as Potashev said in his interviews, they know everything about each other - from preferences and habits to tastes and interests, they even manage to predict their partner’s desires before he or she voices them.

However, even such friendly intra-family relations did not save the union from collapse. The couple divorced, and before the divorce there was an extremely ugly and unpleasant story. Maxim Potashev met another woman, also an expert and the namesake of his first wife - Elena Chukhraeva.

The most unpleasant thing is that Elena was not only left alone with two children in her arms, but at that moment was quite late in the month of pregnancy. Alexandrova categorically broke off all relations with her ex-husband, and when her daughter Vasilina was born, Maxim Potashev was not even included in her documents as a father.

Elena Alexandrova now

Today Elena Alexandrova continues to play “What? Where? When?" and regularly appears on television as a member of an intellectual club.

The first game of the 2016 autumn season was played by Andrei Kozlov’s team, in which Elena Alexandrova also played. Channel One showed this game on September 25, 2016. The game turned out to be difficult. At first, the team lost to TV viewers. The situation could have been corrected by a super blitz, but Mikhail Moon, who was left for the super blitz, failed to cope with the second question. But at the end of the game, Andrei Kozlov’s team, with difficulty, won with a score of 6:5. Elena Alexandrova was recognized as the best player of the team.

On November 20, 2016, the winter series of games started. Here Elena Alexandrova acted as team captain. Moreover, Elena’s team is made up of owners of the “Crystal Owl”.

This game was not without scandal. The players had difficulty answering a question from a TV viewer about the ladies standing by the road, which was seen by writer Henry Petroski (correct answer: books). At this time, the expert standing in the hall was indignant that the club master Andrei Kozlov suggested to the team. According to Askerov, the master loudly pronounced the word “books,” but the manager of the hall did not notice the hint and did not show Kozlov the red card.

Alexandrova’s team gave the answer “bookshelf”, and the answer was counted. Rovshan Asgarov, who was caught more than once using tips and their use, was dissatisfied with the injustice and prejudiced attitude.

Today Elena Alexandrova comes out to play both as a captain and as a team player.

In September 2017, in the autumn series of games, Elena joined the team of the master of the intellectual club and the holder of the title “Best Club Captain” Andrei Kozlov. The team also included Crystal Owl winners Mikhail Moon, Vladimir Antokhin, Alexey Kapustin and Elena Orlova.

In the winter series, Elena again acted as captain. On November 20, 2017, another curious incident occurred. Elena Alexandrova lost to her own namesake. Translator from Omsk Polina Aleksandrova asked a question about fordite stone, which has become rare in the last ten years. The team captain volunteered to answer, but gave the wrong answer. The players correctly associated the stone with car paint, but concluded that the problem was in the composition of the paint, and not in the fact that technology had improved and the overuse and multi-layered pieces of paint from which Fordites were sanded had disappeared.

After this loss, the team answered the next four questions correctly and won the game.

Maxim Potashev, master of the game “What?,” was born on January 20, 1969. Where? When?”, President of the Russian Sports Bridge Federation, financial analyst.

Private bussiness

Maxim Oskarovich Potashev (46 years old) born in Moscow. My father was a candidate of technical sciences, headed a laboratory in Balabanov (Kaluga region), and wrote a number of scientific papers.

Since childhood, Maxim was fond of sports, mainly football and basketball. Then he became a fan of the Moscow club CSKA. In 1991 he graduated from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Management of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. After that, he taught for a long time at his native university in the department of applied economics.

In 1989, he began playing in the sports (non-television) version of “What? Where? When?". The following year, he participated in the first episode of the TV game “Brain Ring”, invented by the founder of “What? Where? When?" Vladimir Voroshilov. Since 1994, he has been a permanent member of the television club “What? Where? When?".

In the sports version of the “intelligent casino” he became the world champion in 2003 and 2011. He is also a six-time champion of Moscow (1996, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2009) and winner of the Russian Cup (2001, 2008, 2011) in “What? Where? When?".

In 2000, based on the results of audience voting, he was recognized as the best player in the entire 25 years of the existence of the television club “What? Where? When?". In addition, he participated in all seasons of the television game “Brain Ring”, twice receiving the title of absolute champion.

After his teaching career, he worked in consulting and marketing agencies. He was the executive director of the Internet agency Result, director of the analytical center Kaspersky Lab, and headed the Center for Operational Marketing of Rosgosstrakh. In 2012, he became development director at the Azbuka-Atticus publishing house. Currently - managing partner of R&P Consulting. The company specializes in promoting corporate IT systems.

Married for the second time. With his first wife Elena Alexandrova he played in the same TV team “What? Where? When?". In 2005, the couple had twins - Roman and Andrey. He met his second wife, Elena Chukhraeva, at the Moscow games of the sports version of “What? Where? When?". In 2014, their daughter Anna was born.

What is he famous for?

Master of the TV game “What? Where? When?”, three-time winner of the “Crystal Owl”, awarded best player at the end of the year, President of the Russian Sports Bridge Federation, financial analyst and consultant.

He has been playing bridge for over twenty years, but he takes defeats in this game calmly. “I enjoy this game, but I don’t expect at all what the tournament will bring me big victories, so I take any result very calmly. Sometimes I manage to play well, and this, of course, makes me very, very happy, and if it doesn’t work out, I treat it completely normally. In "What? Where? When?" the situation is fundamentally different, and I only play to win, and for me there is no place other than the first, any other result is very disappointing. But another question is that I have been playing for so many years, and there have been so many victories and so many defeats, that if I had not learned to experience defeat and quickly get rid of this unpleasant feeling, I probably simply could not stand it all.”

What you need to know

Maxim Potashev

Conducts trainings on the development of intelligence and thinking, marketing and sales, decision-making technologies and team building. At his seminars, he teaches students to work with each other and use intuition when making decisions. “We live in a time when the system of consumption and use of information has changed. There is a lot of information. At the same time, the speed of access to it has increased sharply. This affects the education system. For example, it is quite obvious that today in any science it is no longer necessary to memorize the volumes of information that were required before. Information is easier to find and then filter. The problem is that important skills are lost. Let's say the skill of memorization. The brain stops training,” says Potashev.

In his opinion, intuition is not a mystical, but an absolutely rational thing. “This is accumulated experience in a specific area, transferred to the subconscious sphere. As you and I know, a person uses approximately 5% of his brain, and the remaining 95% remains seemingly unused. But in the process of evolution, for some reason, these 95% did not dry out. Why? Because they are needed to store accumulated information, which, if necessary, can be retrieved and processed,” the player is sure “What? Where? When?".

Direct speech:

About how he became a player “What? Where? When?":“It was so long ago that I don’t really remember. 1989, I graduated from college. I loved the game since childhood, but I seriously thought about trying something when my student years were coming to an end, it became easier to study, it took less time. I found a phone number - then it was called the Youth Editorial Office of Central Television, I was invited to the selection process, and assembled a team of classmates. We didn’t pass the selection, but about a year after that, a new game, "Brain-ring". There was no selection - any team could take part. According to the sporting principle, we made it to the finals from the eight best teams, and their games were already filmed. I am proud to have played in the very first TV game of the very first Brain Ring. And he lost miserably to Alexey Blinov’s team, which included Alexander Druz and Fedor Dvinyatin. In 1994, I was again invited to the selection for “What? Where? When?”, then it was customary to invite players there who somehow showed themselves in the “Brain Ring”. I passed this selection the second time and have been playing in an elite club ever since.”

About hobbies:“By and large, I’m pretty good at two things - sports and science fiction. I love poetry. Especially Blok, Pasternak, Gumilyov. At one time I wrote poetry myself. But this period is over. At one time I went to the animation club at the Gorky Studio. But drawing a hedgehog in forty-eight slightly different poses turned out to be extremely boring. I soon escaped from there. In general, I run away very quickly from places where I am bored. I don’t like cats, queues, boiled onions, stupid women, bad poetry.”

About your own mind:"I can say about weak sides. I have a lot of them: I have a poor memory, I have geographic cretinism, that is, I have very poor orientation in the area, absolutely no ear for music, and not very good with physical intelligence. Everything else seems to be more or less.”

On victories and defeats:“I believe that those who cannot lose will never win. The ability to lose is a very important quality. The ability to win is also not an easy thing. There are situations in life when it is more difficult to survive a victory than to survive a defeat; this requires considerable psychological stability.”
