This is a survival game where you play as one of the eight survivors of a plane crash. Around the forest, cold and wild animals and a simple task - to survive.

The game has a crafting system associated with the character leveling system. To craft something new, you need to learn it. Your hideout and workshop have upgrade levels that open up new possibilities and items for you to craft. Of course, the question remains how much this is tied to the realism that is inherent in the genre of survival games.

The desire to survive leads to the fact that you are constantly in search of resources and food, and as soon as you move away from the source of the fire, the character begins to freeze. The advantage is that you can take the hideout with you and move to another place, although you can’t take both the workshop and the fire with you yet. But building them in the right place is not difficult - the primary buildings are tied to standard resources: stone and wood. Therefore, from the beginning of the game, it is worth stocking them up for future use.

Those items that you have crafted have a service life, so do not be surprised that if you forget, you can go into battle on a boar or wolf with your bare hands instead of a club. Animals in the game are peaceful and do not touch you until you attack first. At least this is true for wild boars. Perhaps other wild predators will not be so friendly to the player.

Do not forget that the game is under development and a lot of things will change before the official release. On the this moment only the economic system seems disputable, when to create the same torch you need not rags and a piece of wood, but wood and stones. Perhaps the developers will work on this moment and add more resources to the system .. umm .. logic or something ..

Game made on Unity engine in polygonal design. There are no complaints about the graphics or sound, except that periodically a lingering sound is heard in the game. Though it might have something to do with the plot, who knows. For everyone, a playable demo version is available without the ability to change settings and, most importantly, saves.

You can download the demo from this link. The game is already available for pre-order, it will cost around $20. The release is scheduled for this fall, and, according to the developers, the project will be cross-platform.

I don’t know about you, but I will definitely buy the game and after the release they will cut letsplays on it. Recently in Early Access Steam appeared The Wild Eight from the Yakut studio Fntastic. The team of the game is small, so the money for development was collected by the whole world. They asked, by the way, fifty thousand dollars, by today's standards - a frivolous amount. In return, they promised a cooperative mode, eight unique heroes and procedurally generated forests of Alaska.

We played the version that is now available in the service valve, and tried to figure out what the Fntastic studio is heading for and what The Wild Eight might turn out to be in the end.

In the wild

Survival is the foundation of The Wild Eight. According to the plot of the game, somewhere in the territory of a cold American state, a plane crashed. The passengers who managed to stay alive found themselves in an unenviable position - there is an endless tundra and dense forests around, there is no one to ask for help, and if the poor fellows can even fight off a pack of wolves, they will certainly die from the hellish cold (a kind of series Lost, only instead of sand in the game snow). They will die if nothing is done. Your task is precisely to help the characters.

As the developers said, at the beginning of the game you can choose one of eight heroes. The surviving passengers are all handymen: one is a medic, the other is better than the rest in construction, the third shoots accurately, and stuff like that (well, definitely Lost!). Some heroes have a mean backstory that fits in just a few words, and this is where all their uniqueness ends.

The bonuses for each of the characters are also dubious. So, William is better than others manage to cope with the frost. In fact, this skill allows him to be outdoors for fifteen seconds longer, which, on the scale of the game, is laughter, and nothing more! It is possible that this problem is only in "early access" and by the release of the characters will be given additional abilities and skills.

One way or another, none of the local heroes can compete with the hunter Hugh Glass from the movie "Survivor" or pilot Mackenzie from The Long Dark - there is no need to hope for the strongest will to live in The Wild Eight. Your hero will die more often than the character in Dark Souls , and all for one of three reasons - from hunger, from cold or from ill health.

An hour after the start of the game, you will understand that in The Wild Eight you need to be afraid not of wolves and bears, but of an extinct fire or an empty bag for provisions. To get food and more firewood, your hero will have to leave the camp for the forest. Moreover, you need to do this very quickly - on average, the heroes are able to hold out in the cold for about three minutes (yes, William - fifteen seconds longer), and then they simply become numb.

The constant need to eat and warm up adds dynamics. Here you will no longer be distracted by tea or talking on the phone - a minute of delay, and the character will die. The worst thing is that after death, he loses all his things, erected buildings and, what is most strange, acquired skills. Just imagine: even sprinting in this game is a separate skill that needs to be learned. If you died, if you please, crawl around the camp like a turtle - until the hero learns the lost ability again.

On the verge

"Early Access" allows developers to communicate with players and instantly respond to their comments, make corrections to the game. Fntastic took advantage of this opportunity and, a few days after the release of the "early" version, added another mode to the game - "Easy". And the mode that was in The Wild Eight from the very beginning is now called "Classic".

The players themselves asked to make the game easier - largely because in the "original" version, which appeared on Steam on February 9, sometimes you wanted to howl at the complexity. It was not even the enemies and not the harsh climate that pissed me off, but time - it was absolutely not enough for anything. Packing more food into your backpack and chopping firewood is as easy as shelling pears, but the heroes can be in the cold for a miserable three minutes!

"Easy" mode makes The Wild Eight more forgiving. An encounter with a pack of wolves can still be the last for a hero, especially in the absence of medical supplies, but otherwise the game is less demanding. However, even here it was not without problems. The developers, as if in spite, have simplified everything so that there is no interest in survival. For example, after death, the character does not lose anything - he retains skills, buildings, and obtained items. In short, they overdid it again, but in the other direction.

Not everything today is smooth and with a cooperative regime. In The Wild Eight there is only text chat, which there is no time to use in especially dangerous moments. Who would think of typing messages when a pack of wolves is chasing a hero? But there are also situations when one cannot cope with a wild beast alone and the help of a comrade will not interfere. Voice communication or systems of gestures, such as in Portal 2, there is no. Of course, you can use Skype, but it will help if you play with friends. And what about the players who find themselves in the forests of Alaska with strangers?

Even worse is that there is almost no need for players to interact. From the very beginning, you can disperse to different corners of the map and go about your business. Yes, it is easier to fight off the beasts with a friend, but other mechanics in The Wild Eight are designed for survival alone. Heroes even live each in their own tent.

The Wild Eight game appeared in early access for everyone on the Steam server back in February 2017. Its creators were the Fntastic studio located in Yakutia - so it is not surprising that snow, frost and icy winds are everywhere in their project.

If you describe the whole toy in a couple of words, it boils down to one thing: in front of you is a typical Leonardo DiCaprio "Survivor" simulator (suffice it to recall his Oscar-winning role). In The Wild Eight, you have to go without food, escape from wild animals, defending your right to life in the fight against nature. And all in order to feel proud of the fact that he was able to save his life in a severe winter.

The Wild Eight: Plot

You will be flying on a plane that is not destined to reach its destination. An accident happens, as a result of which your aircraft crashes, and you, of course, fall with it. You manage to survive, but around you is the land of Alaska, completely covered with snow. You have no connection with the outside world, and from the plane you managed to get only a tent in which you can hide and a few cans of canned food to hold out for the first time.

To be able to escape, you need to learn all the basics of survival: you need to break wood, look for the necessary pebbles of different sizes, light a fire, create an ax to cut down trees, and so on. In principle, nothing unusual for fans of survival games, which is The Wild Eight. The Wild Eight game differs from others in that the learning process ends almost without really starting - you are not given much time to get comfortable. Immediately begins what can kill you at any second - life in the wild.

In many toys, your character is not sent directly to hell at first - they first focus on training, tips different kind etc. The passage of The Wild Eight does not spare you from the very beginning - this is the beauty.

Unfortunately, the need for food becomes a huge barrier to saving one's own life in this game. After all, those few cans will not be enough for the entire process of the game, the food will end very quickly - and then you will have to starve. Or become a hunter. Around you is wild nature, a lot of game, which is quite realistic to kill. However, not with an ax that could fall apart at any second. You can use the pebbles by throwing them at the beast, but don't count on them too much - the beast will only be briefly stunned. You can also trap a rabbit, but this is also very difficult.

Alternatively, you can also collect berries and mushrooms, which will be very helpful at the beginning of the story campaign, when you are not very familiar with the gameplay. However, there will be a meager number of them (do not forget that it is still the winter season). So you need to be extremely careful not to freeze during your trips in search of food, and not to run into wolves. Otherwise, you will become the food.

The Wild Eight Gameplay

Before describing game process, I want to talk about the visual design. The Wild Eight game is very beautifully designed, its design and graphics are amazing, although they are a bit reminiscent of a fairy tale (but according to the terms of the plot, the world around you definitely cannot be called a fairy tale).

As we said above, the main goal of the game is to survive in the harsh Alaska. So, if you suddenly die, you have to start over again. Your hero will again have skills at a minimum level. BUT at the same time, he will have access to the items that the player collected during the last passage. This will allow the player to see all the erroneous decisions that he made during the passage. Also in this case, the toy will slowly open up for the player, teaching him all the rules of survival.

The game teaches you to plan, for example, what to eat at the moment and what to eat tomorrow, where to set up traps, where to go from the stopping place, what to take with you for research, etc.

The Wild Eight is not for you if you are looking for something to completely relax under. In this game, you can’t just put up a tent, make a fire and rejoice - tension is in the air here, a premonition that there may be dangerous animals nearby that will attack at any moment, and also worry about finding food.

The Wild Eight: multiplayer mode

This game deserves special attention if you experience its charms in multiplayer mode. Here it is observed that everything has become somehow simpler: with friends it is easier to look for berries, it is easier to fight with animals, etc. Even from the name it follows that the creators initially relied on the cooperative mode. The passage of The Wild Eight with comrades is complicated only by a total lack of food, which in the company will be felt especially acutely. A real fight for food will unfold: you will hide leftover food from your friends in order to last at least a little longer, and they will do the same.

AT cooperative mode a map awaits you, which can be played by about eight people. At the same time, each character will have his own special skill that will help distribute roles in the group: someone will feel less cold, someone will repair and develop new items perfectly, someone will fight hard, and someone will be able to use a minimum of resources for crafting. However, unfortunately, this is all only in words - in fact, it is practically not felt that someone has advantages over someone.

Now, if the heroes had special active abilities, then the situation could change for the better. However, it is not in our power to change the game.

When you upgrade your hero in The game Wild Eight, it is worth remembering that you are pumping the tent at the same time. So you can run, pump speed, you can go hunting, pumping the hunter in yourself.

However, if you think that you have only one goal - to save your own life, then you are mistaken. You will periodically stumble upon houses that, apparently, were previously inhabited.

By the second part of the game, you will already get a taste of what it is like to become a "Survivor", so it will be much easier.
