Once again, the fantasy universe of Divinity has opened its arms to gamers. The first part made a splash. Nothing superfluous, the developers invested a minimum of funds and got a real masterpiece in RPG genre. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is designed to continue the triumph of Larian Studios and immerse gamers in yet another adventurous adventure.

Classics of the genre

RPG fans have been waiting with bated breath for the continuation of this game and finally their dreams have come true. The most pleasant moment of the game, after its launch, is its conservatism. There are no troubles on the part of developers with which they are trying to stand out from the competition. Everything is very clear and organic.

We are given five races to conquer the new world: humans, elves, dwarves, lizards and the undead. Standard set for similar games, but there is also a highlight: we have the opportunity to choose an existing character with our own backstory or create our own - completely new. Moreover, the presence of prehistory affects the development of the storyline.

The huge selection of classes is impressive. The developers have put a lot of effort into this aspect of the game, for which millions of gamers can thank them. Now everyone can find a character class to their liking. It’s hard to make a choice, there are too many great options and I want to try everything: a knight, a ranger, a thief, a shadow blade, a wanderer, a sorcerer, a wizard, a battle mage, a priest, a caster, a fighter, an inquisitor. All classes are built on the interweaving of physical and magical components. Someone is excellent at close combat, while the other prefers to attack with magic from an ambush.

Spoiler: game design problem

Yesterday I looked at how much I played in Divinity, it turned out to be 183 hours. 183!!! This can be compared to mine complete passage The Witcher with additions, it's about 200 hours. And I only got to the island and the Lawyer, and this is 50-60% of the passage of the game (I got 21 episodes).

How do I play? I go through all the quests, because in games of this type they are interesting, not just kill all the foxes, but REALLY interesting how to extract the demon from the possessed or whether it is possible to help the dog barking over the deceased owner. Larian really invested in the story and content of the game. But! But they made the game TOO long! Too long if you play using all the features of the game. If you select the composition of the party, think over the optimal pumping for a bunch of indicators, it is optimal for passing the most interesting composition, if you pass the same place several times trying to pass it correctly, or more interesting if you steal, if you build relationships with merchants, if you craft, create and upgrade runes, create and upgrade spells, and if you dress your characters in the coolest loot, and cool loot appears with each new level.

Under this loot, my passage was buried. It was not hard for me to read the entire text and interpret the plot for the entire 21 episodes, but every level to run around and dress up the characters is hellish, no one the right job. But clothes here affect everything, for example, it gives evasion or can give poisoning when touched. In addition, this is a separate pleasure, “clothes”! But at level 16, it broke me.

The fact is that in the game you can trade with all the characters, but usually no one has anything particularly interesting, except for the merchants. I have established relations with merchants in order to reduce prices, you give them money and so you bring the relationship to 100 points, it takes about 1000 coins, because you often have to run to them. Different merchants sell different things, there are 3-4 of them on the area, another dwarf sells special bows, and loot for a thief and an archer is sold in and under the tavern, and 1 more npc. Those. to find the right one you need to run around them all when you get each level. Do I want to find the best? So? It’s not enough to run around, you need to calculate that there is enough money, and if not enough, determine what is most important for the purchase.

And that's not the worst. The most terrible thing is to determine what exactly to buy, because the comparison of things is for the character you are currently playing as. And there are 4 of them. It is impossible to pick up things for all the characters in one window, because all the characters have a different relationship with the seller. Therefore, you come to the seller, constantly switching characters, you find things, then switching to the character with the best and relationships, you buy for everyone. And sellers have a lot of things, you also spend time remembering what things you need. In addition, when moving from location to location, the loot changes! It would be possible to buy without thinking about money, but money is a limited resource here and there is always not enough of it, especially at the beginning of the game. And things constantly cost more, and more expensive ingredients for higher-level crafting appear, such as rune frames.

Selling is a little easier than buying, but also a gembel, you need to mark all the resources for sale, then give it to the character with the best attitude.

And there is another awkward moment with the clothes - when you finish the quest, things are given to choose from, they are for different classes, you can choose only 1 and you can compare with the existing things only one, the main character at that moment, if you cancel and do this quest for different character, things will be different. But I don’t remember on which character what things and what to do here? Screenshots of characters' clothes? But the clothes for the quest are excellent, and it is very difficult to choose the best ones!

Comparison window when completing a quest

In addition, the performance of items still depends on the runes inserted into special slots in things. Those. to compare things fully, you need to remove the runes, but this cannot be done in the comparison window.

All this gives a huge loss of playing time due to the ill-conceived design of the game, the design of the purchase windows and the relationship with the sellers. The game would become worse if the seller was 1, or if suitable items were highlighted, or if it was possible to sort things from sellers by type (added in the last fix), but no, why, let it all roll in the "mess" along with before sold things. And when you have 4 characters and you all need to change clothes, stick runes ...

And all this would not be a big problem if somewhere at level 5-7 Larian would be given a quest for an “endless bag of money”, or if I fixed it with the help of Artmani. But no, I played honestly and broke down at 183 hours.

Larian game designers, filling the game with a million things, should think about the optimal system for buying and selling them.

PS An elegant solution to this problem would be to allow players at some level to get good things with auto-leveling.

Games are gradually beginning to show themselves, the money for the development of which was collected through Kickstarter. Alpha versions and all sorts early access this is good, of course, but the final product is another matter. The project from Belgian developers Larian Studios has shown that an idea that looks good in statements and advertising can very well be implemented well with gamers' money.

The most important and attractive feature Divinity: Original Sin was, of course, an old-school RPG format. Actually, it can be traced almost everywhere - from combat and role-playing systems to the plot. The main characters are sent to investigate the murder in one of the coastal cities, where they find themselves involved in a chain of intrigues on a global scale. Gamers who are accustomed to low information content or a light cinematic presentation of the plot are in for a tough test. AT Divinity: Original Sin a huge number of side quests, characters and dialogues that reveal the plot background or simply enliven the game world. To ignore them is, at the very least, to deprive yourself of the numerous parodies and jokes for which the entire series is famous.

Thunder me! That is, not me, but all of you!

The gameplay will also seem very familiar to those who have the titles Fallout and Fallout 2 they are talking about something. Turn-based combat and the presence of several characters who share functions and skills, multiplied by the rather large complexity of the battles, makes you think carefully about actions. And the system of interaction of the elements gives many options for tactical steps on the battlefield.

That inconvenient moment when there is nowhere to rob ...

In general, the implementation of many small things concerns not only combat, but also solving puzzles. In order to bypass the cloud of poisonous fog, you can first burn it, chests can be broken, castles can be melted down, fires can be extinguished, elemental creatures can be healed with spells of the same element. In short, a smart player will be able to come up with many ways to take advantage of the situation. And again, everything is hardcore: there is no necessary spell, or ingenuity did not work - pass by a good opportunity and get one more reason to replay. By the way, it is not necessary to play in splendid isolation. Instead, you can transfer control of one of the central characters to another player. A very bold experiment with a cooperative mode. Yes, and a couple pass story game with text dialogues is not a pleasure for everyone, and certainly not for a gamer randomly selected on the network. Only a true friend with an equal degree of involvement in game process. However, to give players such an opportunity is already an achievement.

There is a dungeon, but there is no dragon. Did you run away on your own again?

It was not completely without drawbacks. So, for example, important event triggers can start to fail. And closer to the second half of the game, the gameplay changes towards constant battles, leaving no room for diplomatic resolution of issues or for extensive interaction with NPCs. Level design sometimes sins in that players are forced to squint and look for some small switch or button as part of the main quest, and not side secrets. You can also add here the lack of the ability to choose a race when creating a character, the reason for which is probably a small budget. However, all these are trifles that are lost against the background of the above charms, great music and neat graphics. Definitely, Larian Studios managed not only to exceed what was promised to the players at the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign, but also to clearly demonstrate that the old-school RPG format for personal games can be of interest not only to nostalgic oldfags. Unlike the game

Larian Studio done crazy game. Rich, interesting, beautiful, original. Divinity: Original Sin conquers new gamers every day and deserves it. Can anyone blame the developers for something now? The gameplay is awesome, the story in the game stretches through the whole series of games Divinity, a cooperative mode- this is a huge scattering of cherries on a big tasty cake. Larian have set the bar high for future similar RPG games, but who can beat it?

Undoubtedly, now many games of this genre will be compared with Divinity: Original Sin. It is quite possible that someday we will look back on Divinity as we do now with Morrowind. Maybe. And perhaps not. And it depends on what happens after.

In the coming year, we are waiting for the release of several cool role-playing games of this type at once. Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera. And these are the three largest projects. There are also smaller games. Age of Decadence, Blackguards 2 or deadstate. The list of games is really big. And many will have a very hard time, because. Divinity: Original Sin is a star.

Who can really compose Larian strong competition?

Undoubtedly, Brian Fargo and his post-apocalyptic Wasteland 2. This game should give us back what ended with Fallout 2. Endless wasteland, the consequences of the apocalypse and many problems. Familiar setting, huge free world, familiar mechanics. Like Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2 comes to us with Kickstarter with a huge budget. And I'm sure Fargo will make a great game.

Another native of Kickstarter - Torment: Tides of Numenera, developed inXile Entertainment. As soon as it is completed Wasteland 2, inXile will take up Torment both hands. So far, according to rumors, development is underway, but not very quickly. One way or another, this project also needs to be monitored.

Well, the third big project with Kickstarter" a - Pillars of Eternity. Obsidian are trying. Already in August, the game will be presented at Gamescom, where everyone can feel it with their own hands. Development has been going on for a long time, progress in work is visible to the naked eye, and so far everything that is known about the game is preparing for the fact that we are waiting for another big and interesting many hours of adventure. Are we ready for it? Yes! Is it ready to surprise us? Yes! How much will it hit us? Will show time.

Of course, we can get unexpectedly interesting projects that were in the shadow of their "big brothers". The same Age of Decadence far from the most boring project, and at the exit we can expect an interesting and quality game. But will she be great? Will she be memorable or one of the? Or dead state, eg. Will they be able to bring something new to an established genre?

Divinity: Original Sin smog. And with this, he is gaining high marks from critics, journalists and gamers. And now, when the wave of excitement subsides, it will be finally clear how great this game is. And the problem with all upcoming games is that they will be compared. They will definitely be compared with other projects. Every detail, every centimeter, every screw.

Will the listed games be able to withstand this comparison? A big question, the answer to which will give only time. Time and we are with you.
