By the way, customization has also been "delivered", so those who want to somehow stand out will have something to decorate their aircraft with, for example, change the color of the hull.

Guild system introduced Pirate brotherhoods who have the opportunity to rebuild their own fort. In the future, the developers promise to introduce new mode"Fortress Siege", where newly minted pirates will defend their stronghold from attacks by unfriendly guilds. In the future, it should be possible to “rob caravans”: players who bring building materials to their base can be attacked and take the contents of their holds for the needs of their own brotherhood.

In general, the game leaves a positive impression, but time will tell how “replayable” it is. As for the donation in the game, it does not affect the balance in any way, but will only speed up the leveling of the captain and the fleet as a whole. The gameplay does not go far from the canons of networked online games. In "" there are several battle modes on different maps, each of which involves two teams of seven people. Team battles and capturing points typical of this genre are diluted with interesting variations in the form of treasure hunting or caravan escort. There are no completely non-standard battles yet, but we must pay tribute to the developers: they often add new content.

The greatest interest is caused by the aeronautical means themselves. At the moment open testing added 47 different ships. They are armed with side and bow guns, and also have three slots for activated modules. Airships can be improved by researching and installing new equipment on them. So far, there are four ranks of ships, and to get a new one, you need to thoroughly study the previous one. In the game, forces are divided into two factions with approximately the same amount of available equipment. The visual difference between the ships of different sides is reduced to a minimum - it is not clear why this was done at all, because both classes have similar tasks.


It will be difficult for a beginner to deal with all the variety of ships, and the initial tutorial is too stingy with information and teaches only the basics of management. For simplicity, airships can be divided into several basic types.

The most nimble are clippers, which, due to their maneuverability, have a strong influence on the outcome of the fights. The weak strength of the hull makes them vulnerable to any type of guns, so not everyone will be able to use them effectively. Clippers are equipped with slow but powerful torpedoes that deal massive damage if they hit the target. There are also support clippers that can give bonuses to the team or weaken the enemy.

Light corvettes have become slightly less maneuverable, which carry special mines on board that cause damage over a large area. There are also support corvettes that restore the strength of an ally's hulls or shields.


Engineering frigates can be called universal, which can install special mechanisms that act independently. These can be turrets or mini-bots that heal the team and cripple the enemy.

For beginners, a series of medium cruisers with homing projectiles is recommended. Unfortunately, this is their only bonus, and the ships themselves are rather weak in terms of characteristics compared to the rest. The main attacking force on the battlefield was medium assault cruisers, capable of inflicting solid damage and getting out of the thick of things in time.

The role of the defenders is performed by all kinds of galleons and battleships, huge and clumsy. Low maneuverability is compensated by either good protection or powerful weapons, depending on the type of vessel. To destroy a heavy battleship, you have to concentrate the strength of the whole team, and sniper galleons adhere to the principle of "one shot - immediately a corpse."


After the start of open testing, a special heavy battleship appeared in "" that can control the course of the battle from afar, changing the view mode to strategic. Unfortunately, it was not possible to open it, so let's envy the lucky ones who got to it first.

Each player personifies the captain and can choose an icon, frame and other decorations that suit his mood. Captain talents are unlocked after completing a series of quests and can increase the performance of some weapons, which adds to the individuality.

For participating in battles, you can get treasure maps as a reward, with the help of which expeditions are assembled to extract gold, experience, premium currency, and various decorations for the ship. The captains are driven into a rigid design framework, and it will not be possible to greatly change the appearance of the airships. The choice is offered to change the color of the ship's hull, choose a catchy flag or install sails of a different color and pattern. Decorations are available for more than just premium currency, as hardworking players will be able to earn some rare color options when they complete special achievements.


In the very first days of the servers, players could unite in pirate brotherhoods - an analogue of guilds. A small bonus in the form of adding the name of the brotherhood to the nickname will cost two million gold, and not everyone can afford this. In the future, the developers promise a new mode, participation in which will bring special resources for construction. Outposts are offered to build, which will help the brotherhoods earn more money. There will also be modes where you have to defend your own or attack other people's outposts. Solo players will be able to hunt for guild caravans carrying resources for construction, as well as participate as a mercenary in the sieges of these forts. Unfortunately, this is still in the plans, and at the moment there are no in-game bonuses from joining the brotherhood yet.

As in other games of this genre, there is a strong dependence on the team. No matter how good a captain you are, it will be impossible to defeat the enemy team alone. Therefore, it is highly recommended to find a team as soon as possible and fly out at least two or three, which will increase the chances of winning several times.


Many testers complained about poor optimization, although at higher than average settings, the frame rate per second stayed above 30 even in the most heated battles on a rather old computer. Also pleasing are almost daily hotfixes that change the balance and add new content. It is felt that a lot of time and effort is spent on testing, and the developers take their work responsibly.

And they will hit the sky. Because although this is also an online shooter about airship battles, there is nothing else in common between these games. If we compare Pirates with another game, then the closest analogue will be, oddly enough, Overwatch.

To get an idea of ​​what regular combat looks like in Pirates, just imagine Overwatch characters boarding their respective airship classes. The sniper galleon "Zorkiy" hides in an inconspicuous corner between the rocks and shoots the enemy from a great distance - just like the Widow. The support clipper "Victoria" follows the ally's ship, constantly repairing it - why not an Angel? The Pirates even have their own Thornbjorn, the Molot engineering frigate, which can install defensive turrets.

There are currently 48 ships in the game. For some - well-armored, clumsy, but with a huge supply of health and powerful guns - it's good for beginners to play: the price of a mistake is not so high here and you won't be knocked down with a single shot. There are boats with average characteristics that will suit those who appreciate balance. And for aces - small sailboats, the main feature of which is to get close to the enemy ship, fire a volley that will blow half aboard, and quickly escape. But if you do not have time to maneuver - most likely, you will pay with your life.

But the similarities with Overwatch don't end with ship classes alone. The game has very compact maps and short battles: a maximum of 15 minutes for each battle. If your ship is shot down, it will be out of combat for a few seconds, and then it will take you another 10-20 seconds to get to the place of the fight. Even the modes are similar: in addition to the standard ones, Overwatch has truck escort, and Pirates has caravan protection (or robbery).

Well, the most important thing, which finally takes the "Pirates" out of the clip of military shooters on serious soups - there is no complicated physics here. An inexperienced player may not notice this, but veterans of battles in WoT and similar games they will immediately notice that the cannonballs fired from the side of your ship fly in a straight line, not in an arc. There are no calculations for frontal penetration and lower armor plate penetration, and you don’t need to know anything about hull armor - it’s enough to understand that an energy shield covers you from each side, and it collapses when you are shot at.

The enemy is also unlikely to become indifferently hanging in the air - damaged energy shields must be removed from the shelling in time, so the duel of two airships resembles a waltz: you circle in three planes, guessing each other's movements and trying your best to keep up with the rhythm of reloading guns.

But duels are a rather rare occurrence in a team shooter: it is much more interesting to play using all the advantages of allies and using their help. Therefore, the most important thing for someone who wants to conquer the top and enter the list best pirates- study the abilities of each ship and remember who works best with whom in conjunction. And now it's time to finally say that in fact the "Pirates" are far from the most simple game. When you spend the first ten battles and it starts to seem to you that you have more or less figured out what to expect from each sailboat, your opponents will begin to surprise you.

The fact is that each ship has its own unique tricks, and not all of them are open from the very beginning: to access the most interesting ones, you will have to fly a lot and loot gold. At the same time, the appearance of the ship does not reflect in any way that, for example, it can suddenly teleport for half a map or hang protective force screens, avoiding inevitable death. The same engineer can release repair probes instead of turrets - and this is a completely different role in the team.

At the same time, there are no harmless vessels in the Pirates universe - even a support ship can deal damage and make frags. In addition, the system takes into account all your actions that led to the victory of the team, and therefore not the brightest fighters, but hard workers-engineers who only did what they repaired the allies, get into the top of the best every now and then.
