We looked at all the games in the Telltale series and tried to identify the best ones.

Telltale built a stronghold in their corner gaming industry, with its own play style. The studio started developing games in the style of Lucasarts quests, but in 2011 they started something new. The Telltale series is based on the format we've seen in Japanese visual novels, but with a western twist and episodes. Telltale did such a good job with the format that it was even adopted by other studios, most famously Dontnod Ent's Life is Strange.

Like other story-telling games, Telltale stuck to a certain formula that could be applied in a variety of areas. Galaxy: The Telltale Series, April 2018, became the tenth game in the series, and the series began with Jurassic Park.

I enjoyed (and sometimes hurt) playing everything telltale games. And I think that the time has come to judge and put the products of the franchise in their places. Well, not all. Only games from a certain setting, so Puzzle Agent, Back to the Future and Tales of Monkey Island will not be included in this list. We also do not take into account The Walking Dead: New Frontier - since the series is not over. Let's see what we got.

First episode: November 2011

Promise: We start from worst game series, but she also pioneered an entire subgenre. Jurassic Park: The game takes place during and after the main plot of the first film. The game was created in collaboration with Universal Studios.

Review: The design is really bad. The only impressive thing is that this game served as the basis for other Telltale projects. The characters in Jurassic Park are not memorable, and the plot is incomplete. This is really a problem, since the game format includes exploration, mini-puzzles and quick-time events (where you have to press buttons at the right time), so the story is so important. Everything is based on vivid characters and dialogues and an incredible adventure. Jurassic Park has none of that, even though it's based on an amazing movie.

Promise: one of the most short games franchise, for just three episodes. The Walking Dead: Michonne is side story to the comic. Players are given the story of the beloved Michonne when she left Rick's group in episode 126 of the comic. The game was originally planned to be released as additional content for the second season of The Walking Dead, but it was decided to release it as a standalone project.

Review: To begin with, the gap between Jurassic Park and The Walking Dead: Michonne is huge. The problem here is the size. Only three episodes and Telltale simply didn't have enough time to form a strong standalone story.

Michonne herself is a very strong character, portrayed in the style of Samira Wylie from Orange is the New Black, but the rest of the characters in the game are mediocre. The plot is predictable, and since the duration is not so long, the illusion of choice (which the series is so famous for) is very blurred. Add technical bugs and glitches. The Walking Dead: Michonne is more of a strong step aside than a failure.

First episode: October 2015

Promise: Based on the worldwide hit Minecraft, Minecraft: Story Mode is perhaps the most family game series. Players can choose male or female character Jess to save the world from the coming winter storm by uniting in the Order of the Stone. Unfortunately, the main characters do not like each other, so Jess and friends go on a journey around the world.

Review: I really like Minecraft: Story Mode - it's easier and fun game among other titles. Unfortunately, the lightness of the tones goes hand in hand with a fairly straightforward, kid-friendly storyline that won't surprise anyone over the age of 10.

It is also worth noting the frequency of the release of episodes. There are 8 episodes in total, 5 of which are the main story, and 3 are additional content. The main episodes came out once a month, including small parts, as well as really long episodes.

The extra content was pretty weird, the focus was more on the Minecraft fan service than the 5 episodes of the main one storyline. And also the whole story ended rather smoothly, without a satisfying conclusion. It seemed that Telltale simply did not know where to lead the story.

First episode: December 2014

Promise: At the height of the popularity of Game of Thrones, Telltale offered a 6-episode adventure based on the film adaptation of Robert Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. While the story runs parallel to the TV show, Telltale focused on House Forester, one of the noble houses under the Stark banner. The events take place after the "Blood Wedding" and the House of Foresters is trying to survive and is playing their own game of thrones. As a bonus, the developers consulted with Robert Martin himself, and actors from the TV show took part in playing their characters.

Review: The problem was with episode releases. The first was in December 2014, when the sixth was released in November 2015 and there were two or three months between some episodes. The first couple of episodes set the pace of the game well, so scheduling problems ruined the reputation.

I'd call this game one of Telltale's most ambitious attempts yet, where the choices really do seem to matter right up to the last episode. Unfortunately, the fact that the Foresters are reminiscent of the Starks, only pampered in the warmth, doesn't help either. The end of the season was also unsatisfactory. The players have a lot of questions. For example, what happened to the Northern Grove. The announcement of a second season will perhaps put the series back on track.

First episode: December 2013

Review: The second season was a great continuation, where the players were given the opportunity to play as an older and wiser Clem. And it seems that this is the fruit of our labors in the first season. The problem here is that the plot seems pointless, with Clem carrying everything on his shoulders. Most of the characters are just made to die, and the game comes down to deciding who stays alive and who doesn't.

When we get to the last episode, we see an ending that lacks the atmosphere that the series has set. This is a good season, but it has not been able to surpass its predecessor.

Promise: Having disconnected from previous works, Telltale has a chance to tell new story about dark knight. Here we see Batman at the start of his career, who has yet to find his niche in Gotham. In addition, we get equal parts of both Bruce Wayne and his legacy and his dark role. Batman: The Telltale Series also announced a "crowd-play" system for scoring choices between all players, and players were able to see which choices, in percentage terms, all players made.

Review: I started this game without expecting much and was very surprised. As a comic book fan, I appreciated Telltale's approach to this story. The special thing is that there's more focus on Bruce Wayne than on Batman: he really dives into the aftermath of Thomas Wayne's actions, the dubious path of Bruce Wayne's childhood friend Oswald Cobblepot, and also seeing what Wayne means in Gotham. It's a more human approach to Batman, and it worked.

The problem was that the illusion of choice was quickly shattered after just a couple of episodes. A choice that seems important has no consequences. This is a problem with some of the Telltale games, but it was all too obvious here. I also think there were enough plot threads to work without jumping to the Arkham kids at the end of the season. Too much, but so little room to maneuver.

I understand that all this may sound tougher than I described in The Walking dead season 2, but in my opinion, the work done here is still better. Telltale knew what they wanted to do, but the execution wasn't 100% good.

First episode: April 2012

Promise: It really was the beginning of the Telltale we know now. Based on the Walking Dead comic book series by Robert Kirkman, the game tells the story of several survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Former university professor Lee Everett was released on his way to prison, helped him in this zombie. After Lee meets a little girl Clementine, whom he takes under his protection. Lee and Clem with other survivors search for shelter and Clem's parents.

Review: Who knew Telltale had such potential? What really worked in the first season was the relationship between Lee and Clem. In the past, he is a professor who committed a terrible crime, and Clem guides his moral compass. Lee knows he's killed a man and realizes he'll have to kill more to survive, but saving Clem is the only thing he needs.

While the rest of the characters are pretty well cast, the relationship between Lee and Clem forms a solid core game that fulfills every need and leads to a bitter ending. What the company's games lack right now is a strong emotional drive, and in Walking Dead they have completely coped with the task.

Promise: Another adaptation of the comic, this time based on Fables by author Bill Willingham. Review: Telltale went all out on this series! If The Walking Dead was a surprise, The Wolf Among Us showed that the studio really knows what it's doing. The scale is quite small, but so layered. The relationship between Bigby and the rest of the residents, including Snow White and Bluebeard. Detachment and despair lower city, plays in contrast to the underworld and the elite of Fable City.

Bigby is a great character, but The Wolf Among Us also gives us a glimpse of who he used to be, and was one of the best decisions in the history of the company. If linking episodes is sometimes hard for the company, then here they really worked perfectly.

Tales from the Borderlands is really funny, as in the dialogue, digressions, and even the text from Reese's eye-scanner. This is a great adventure that combines modern realities and classic western. The main characters are strong, and the secondary characters make the picture more alive; The interactions between the characters are just wonderful.

And when you get attached to these characters, the sensual moments between them are really amazing. The formula is simple and really easy to recreate, but when Telltale gets down to business, we are in for a masterpiece.
