How to draw geographical maps. How to draw a beautiful territory map. Hills and forests - add them where they seem appropriate. They are easy to remove

1) We drive the cat and take a sheet of drawing paper (it’s good when it’s not just whatman paper, but paper with some kind of texture, such as watercolor).

2) To make it convenient for us to draw, and the pictures were even and did not warp, we stretch the paper on the tablet. To do this, we soak it well with water, put it on the tablet and smooth it so that there are no air bubbles left.

3) We bend the edges of the paper and glue them to the tablet with PVA glue, Moment-crystal or Titanium. First we glue one side, then the opposite side (slightly pulling). Then, in turn, glue the two remaining sides.

4) We carefully bend the corners and also glue them.

5) The tablet is stretched and now it needs to be toned in a pleasant shade of old parchment.

6) To do this, we go to the bathroom so as not to spread dirt on the desktop. Again we drive out the cat, which managed to get over there and is thrilled on the warm floor.

7) We dilute a concentrated solution of coffee in any container. The cheaper the coffee, the better (there is more dye)))

8) We can take a sponge and gently blot all the coffee paper, but we are real artists, so we just splash the coffee on the paper and smear it with our hands. Doctor, in this spot, I see...

9) The paper on the tablet will go in small waves, but do not worry about it - after drying, they will smooth out. Our coffee can flow into these waves, so from time to time you need to tilt the tablet in different directions, dispersing these puddles.

10) I was too lazy to do it, so the coffee dried up with drips. Sometimes they are even beautiful, but this time I don’t need them and I smear them with a wet piece of cotton wool.

11) Haha! then we draw the tablet into rectangles (I chose the size 85x125 mm) and draw maps (for example, you can take real maps and copy from them, anyway, you won’t get exactly the same and you will have your own author’s interpretation!) First, the most difficult thing is pictures. We draw with black ink and pen, paint with pencils (or paints, as you like). With a white pencil, you can lighten some areas a little (it looks very advantageous on tinted paper). Draw freely and calmly, do not be shy if it seems to you that you are drawing some kind of nonsense. Believe that neatly made, even cards will look good with ANY pictures, as long as the king can be distinguished from the lady))) Although in this case there is a letter designation in the corner of the card.

12) In order not to suffer with the second half of the cards, I photographed them and printed them out. Next, transfer them to the tablet known way: reverse side shade the pictures with a soft pencil, and outline with a pen on top. The pencil leaves an imprint.

13) For greater effect, draw a golden stroke along the edge of the card (with acrylic paint, marker or gel pen). Pencil drawing MUST be fixed with a special aerosol varnish.

14) After the varnish has completely dried, cut off the paper from the tablet.

15) And the sheet is perfectly even!

16) We stretch the tablet again, we need to draw cards with numbers. I am sure that you have never paid attention to how the suit icons are arranged in tens-eights-sixes and other small things))) We are studying this issue, drawing diagrams for memory.

17) We create a kind of modular grid to help ourselves. Here, by the way, all the peaks are drawn in the same direction and this is a mistake. One half of the spades should be turned in the opposite direction (clubs and hearts too, but with tambourines it's all the same, they are symmetrical))).

18) Again we take out black and (mmmmm!) - warm red carmine ink and draw all digital maps.

19) Next, using a knife and an iron ruler, we separate all the cards from each other. No matter how we measure - they will not work perfectly even, do not strive for this.

20) For a card shirt, you can either draw a picture (then scan and reproduce it) or pick up a suitable one on the Internet. I found a suitable picture in the patterns on the wallpaper of my kitchen)))

21) We print it on the printer in the amount of 36 pieces (it fits four pieces per sheet).

22) Let the size of the shirt be slightly larger than the card itself - this way we can better glue the edges. Easy to stick with glue stick. But it is better to use glue from a more expensive company, so that over time the glue does not dry out and the backs of your cards do not fly around like autumn leaves. We cut off the extra edges with scissors, at the same time rounding the corners of the cards.

23) ALWAYS put our cards under the press. Preferably all night.

This is one of several map tutorials I'm creating for , an amazing group that I'm helping to grow.

If you used this tutorial, tell me, show me, I would really like to see what you did! And feel free to ask questions too!

For this tutorial you will need a font. Booter Zero Five(see link at the end of the lesson).

This map making tutorial involves (made up) maps that look more like fantasy or pirate maps. There are no elements of the environment on them. If you want to create a map for your world / just for fun / or for something else, you will get it, in just one hour of work!

Before you begin... you'll need Photoshop, a map file, and a font (see link at the end of the tutorial). It would also be nice to have a scanned photo of some landscape that you would like to depict on your computer. I used Photoshop CS3 Extended to create my map. I also used brushes for some of the steps.

STEP 1

Take a close look at this screenshot. Don't forget to Save it As (Save as...) and create a background layer.

STEP 2

Click on the image to view the image in full size and 100% quality.

If you have a sketch, scan it or open a photo. Open it in separate file PS, increase its brightness if necessary (Image – Correction – Brighten / Contrast) (Image – Adjustments – Brighten / Contrast). Insert the image by dragging it with the mouse onto the map file. You can resize the image in two ways: either by clicking Edit – Transform – Resize (Edit – Transform – Scale), or, while holding the SHIFT key, pull the diagonal arrows that appear at the corners of the image.

STEP 3

Whether you imported an image or not, create a new layer on top of the Map layer, grab your brush and start painting your terrain. It is better to make it a little larger than the image itself.

STEP 4

After completing the sketch, take the Eraser (eraser) and walk along the outer edges of the sketch. They will be crooked and out of line, so you will need to go over these lines a few times to clean everything up. If you want to make islands, make them now.

STEP 5

Click on the image to view the image in full size and 100% quality.

Now you can take the tool Quick selection (quick selection tool) and select everything that is outside of your land. After that, we start to erase even more; no continent or country is perfectly straight, round or angular. Let's add debris, depressions and cracks all over our map! =P Also, add some non-ideal-shaped rivers and lakes. Your people will surely need water to survive!

STEP 6

Click on the image to view the image in full size and 100% quality.

Population! Open the group Cities (Cities), and make the Capitol...more precisely the Capital (capital turned into capitol by mistake) and the City (town) visible. The capital is circled in red. You will probably have more than one settlement / city / village / etc., and here's how to multiply them: click the second mouse button on the layer with the City (town) and select Duplicate layer / Make duplicate (duplicate layer) in the list that will appear. The new city will appear on top of your original city. Remember this for the next step!

STEP 7

Open the group Landscape (landscape). You have a choice of more realistic and freehand drawing-like objects. To keep the picture from looking ridiculous, use only one of these styles. You can place these objects wherever you want, and you can also duplicate (multiply) them. When planting trees on your plot, place mountains, rocks and forests, consider environment if you haven't already. Civilization and vegetation, for example, usually spawn where there are water sources. If you need to resize something, use the technique described in STEP 2.

STEP 8

Click on the image to view the image in full size and 100% quality.

Open the group Text (text). It contains the following layers: the name of the River/Forest/forest name), the name of the City (town name), and the name of the Continent (continent name). You can use a wider variety of fonts (eg Calibri for forest names, Juice for country names, etc.). The easiest way to make the font fit is to duplicate the original text and change its font. Next, we play with effects. In this case, the outer glow and drop shadow look very good here. Don't forget to give names to all worlds, continents, countries, regions, states, villages, towns, cities, capitals, oceans, rivers, lakes, mountains and plains. You don't have to name every detail on the map, but it will hurt your eyes.

And it's done! WOW! Well, at least not unless you really want to make your map something one of a kind. If you still want...

ACCESS TO THE NEW LEVEL IS OPEN!!

Scroll down the page to see the most interesting, but absolutely optional effects that can be applied to the map.

SUPER DRUPER EFFECTS

The following is optional, but it contains some information that will help improve your map.

Card Paper

If you want more focus and texture on your map, you can change the background! First, create a new layer on top of the map layer. Take a brush, select White color, and for the cause. Personally, I like scatter brushes for this, but you can use any other brushes, for example, with coins, ships, animals, plants, etc.

Pay attention to the screenshot below, where you can see the changes after processing with a brush. If you are using a diffuse brush (or any other brush with unusual patterns), use it to paint over the entire surface of the map so that there are no empty spaces.

Add Brightness

Is your map not bright enough for you? Click Image – Correction (Image – Adjustments) and the following options will open before you: Tone / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) and Curves (Curves), which are the best corrective options for our map. Go ahead, experiment! Notice the difference between this screenshot and the one above. Thanks to the Brightness/Contrast correction.

Guide Arrows

No decent map is complete without a compass!

The layer with Compass (compass) is placed under the group of layers Landscape (landscape). Place it in an area where there is no land, adjusting the size if necessary. I also like to add all sorts of effects to the compass. Experiment! On the screenshot you can see my favorite settings (the words highlighted with a “marker” are the names of various effects).

Click on the image to view the image in full size and 100% quality.

Watermark - protection from paranoids (me, inclusive). Watermarks can protect your work from theft. If you have your own signature - or even if you want to use your name, e-mail, dA page address - you can add it. Create a new layer (regular or text). All you have to do is add a "watermark" to the new layer, resize it and reduce the opacity (Opacity) or leave it as you like. Speaking of watermarks and things to like... this whole tutorial is watermarked... don't even think about stealing it!

Also, if you want to create paths and signs on the map to give it a taste of ADVENTURE, just add a new layer on top of the terrain layer (land), take a brush, select a color close to the color of the map, and paint! You can also use humorous brushes, like the sea dragon on my map.

Greetings. In the card video, I promised to translate the article as soon as we get 150 likes. It happened in 3.5 hours… I had to rush and keep my promise. Below is a full translation of the article, according to which I myself drew the world.

Creating a world from a map (How to draw a map)

This article was originally written for those who build own worlds for books, but in general the process is useful for anyone who wants to create a world and draw a map.

Let's state one thing from the very beginning.

The card doesn't have to be pretty.

I understand what you're thinking - these Middle Earth posters are great. Of course, the map must be beautiful. However, in terms of creating worlds cute card is a Very Bad Thing. Beautiful things seem precious and we strive to leave the jewels intact. When we building worlds we need to break something, and often. So forget what we do nice card. We are making a functional map. In fact, we will make many maps, one after another. Much like notes and ideas are not a finished manuscript, a map is not a final representation of the world. This is a visual notepad and we will have to cross out, erase and rebuild everything from the very beginning.

Therefore, today we do not need Photoshop. We need a pile of paper and a pencil.

Let's create our own world

First of all, think about the "world" that you need to build. In most cases, this is a certain territory, which is much smaller than the planet on which the events take place. Very few stories actually span the entire globe, so let's start by highlighting the zone in which the events of the story take place. This will allow us to focus, and it also means that there will always be some uncharted and distant land to explore in the future.

Your story will have nations, city-states, or other forms of centers of power. Begin by briefly outlining the relationship between them. Do they howl? Or are they acting aloof? Butting for resources or close allies? Think about what makes them special. Are they known for their rich wheat fields? For iron? For the fleet? I'm sure you see the point here. Nations are defined by the geography they live in, just as we define geography by nation. A nation with a large fleet needs wide access to the sea, but it must be protected by mountain ranges, which will allow it to reduce its dependence on other troops for the fleet. The two warring parties must be close and must be able to attack each other.

Pay attention to the main types of terrain at this stage - the length of the coastlines and mountains. Make notes about other types of terrain that come to mind - these will come in handy later.

  1. Rough forms - there are 6 interconnected nations

Now it's time to start our map. Take a pencil and draw circles at the location of your nations. Nations that are in an alliance or are at war with each other should be nearby. Those that rarely interact are further away, or there are difficult natural obstacles between them. Drawing circles sounds easy, but the step may take several attempts to build relationships between nations correctly.

  1. Coastline. Avoid straight lines, draw a broken random line

As you understand, circles are not a map. It's time to draw the coastline. Consider which nations require a long coastline and which will be purely land based. Then let your pen dangle. Literally, avoid straight lines. Shores are usually twitchy, broken lines. If your line doesn't look drawn by a drunken ant, then you're doing something wrong.

  1. Mountains don't have to be beautiful. Inverted triangles will do the job just fine.

Now let's add mountains. Mountains tend to form ridges. Avoid wanting to fill an entire block of land with mountains. Instead, arrange them in wavy lines. Often they follow the coastline (remember the Andes). In terms of history, they form obstacles for heroes and create natural barriers between nations or between nations and the Great Unknown. Mountains also serve as a boundary between climates. So if you want desert in one place and jungle in another, it's better to put a mountain range between them, which will stop rain from the jungle on the way to the desert.

  1. As the rivers flow towards the shore, they only join, never branch.

Rivers are next. The rains fall on the mountains and run down to the sea. Rivers always flow to the lowest point - and there's always that lowest point. This means that the rivers, as they move towards the sea, do not break up, but only unite. Therefore, there are no rivers that flow from one bank to another, because at some point this will require the river to flow upwards. Therefore, there are no lakes from which two rivers flow and flow into the sea - there is always only one point with the lowest height. Imagine that the river is a tree. There is only one trunk that flows into the sea and many branches that touch the mountains.

Rivers are also a strategically important element. It is almost impossible to find the mouth of a river without a city, and virtually all great cities are built on the river. If you know where the city should be, then draw a river of sufficient size through it. Rivers also provide excellent protection. It's hard enough to build a wall across a country's borders, but it's almost as hard to move troops across a well-fortified river.

  1. Hills and forests - add them where they seem appropriate. They are easy to remove

Add hills next to the mountain ranges. Place scaffolding and evaluate how it looks. Remember: it doesn't have to be wonderful and wonderful. If you don’t like something, take a new sheet of paper and start over. Sketch another coastline. Turn upside down.

When the drawn territory satisfies you, circle the necessary lines with a pen, erase the extra pencil - including the borders of states. Scan or take a photo of the map. Take a break from work and have a good snack.

After you come back, try the next experiment. Forget about previously invented nations and races. Look at the untouched world with an unclouded look. If you were to found a country in this world, where would you start? Where are the coolest strategic points? See the world as if you were playing Civilization. Where are the resources that need to be protected, what lands would you try to capture? Use colored pencils to sketch out the various states and their borders. Remake the rivers, if necessary, move other elements. You have many copies of the map - experiment!

After the general arrangement suits you, we will add the cities.

Cities appear for certain reasons. They cannot just appear in the middle of the void. The population needs food, water, trade and security. Rivers can provide all of this, and this is the reason why towns and cities have always grown close to river mouths. Locate capitals in places that are easy to defend and well connected by transport networks to other parts of the country. Place small towns in key positions, whether it be the heart of a mining region in the mountains, a strategic river crossing, or a trading town in the middle of cattle pastures. Also note the main fortifications.

  1. Place cities, towns and fortifications

With all the elements listed, placing roads becomes a simple task. They will connect big cities with regions that produce resources and other important trade routes.

You now have a perfectly functioning map! But remember: this is not the final version, you can change it. Each time you run yourself through this process, you will make a better map. Each time you sketch, you will get new ideas. As you write about your world, the map will inevitably change. For example, between the two countries there should be a wild wasteland. Redraw the map - that's what it's here for. Creating text and drawing the world will help build the relationship between the story and the map.

And when your manuscript is ready to go from draft to final, your map is ready to go from sketch to illustration. But that's a topic for another article.

The winter cold outside the window and drifts on the roads do not please fans of outdoor activities and tourism, but they give enough time to finally make out the pictures, routes and impressions from past trips. So right now is the time best time to report on their adventures and plan itineraries for the future. Of course, all travelers know and actively use for these purposes the beautiful Google service Maps. However, the list of map services does not end there, and in this article you will learn about worthy alternative tools for creating, publishing and analyzing custom maps.

The online service Scribble Maps differs from many competitors in that this service is perfect for both beginners and experts in the field of cartography. Its simplicity and functionality make Scribble Maps one of the most popular mapping applications in education and science. The service offers users a wide range of options, including mapping maps, measuring distances, importing KML data, importing tabular data, applying custom labels, text, images, and much more.

open street map

Service open street Map (OSM) follows the same principles that formed the basis for the creation of the world-famous Wikipedia. All the information here is collected by the efforts of tens of thousands of volunteers who provide the project with data from personal GPS trackers, aerial photographs, video recordings, satellite imagery and street views. Although the accuracy of these data varies considerably by region, it is still safe to say that OSM for some areas contains more detailed and up-to-date information than Google Maps.

For all registered users, the function of editing maps is available. You can export data from your GPS device, draw routes manually, put markers, mark interesting and memorable places, give descriptions and comments. It is possible to export maps in OpenStreetMap XML format or as an image (PNG, JPEG, SVG, PD), you can also get an HTML code to embed on any site.

Build-A-Map

Although Build-A-Map makes a somewhat frivolous impression with its large bright icons, it is still quite an adult tool for creating maps and diagrams. The source of cartographic information here is Google Maps, on top of which the user can create his own layers and apply the necessary data to them.

The Build-A-Map service allows you to add not only banal marks and tracks, but also text labels, circles, polygonal shapes, lightboxes with photos, lay routes, and so on. To all this, you can embed weather information, Google Places points, Panoramio photo hosting images. The map obtained in this way can be saved in the service storage and displayed as a link to it, or you can get a code for embedding in a web page.

tripline

The Tripline service is unlikely to be able to help in developing a route for serious travel, but for creating a multimedia presentation about the roads traveled, it is just perfect. In its work, the service combines three components: the track of your route, photos and musical accompaniment, which best reflects the spirit of your adventure.

Putting it all together, the service will generate a spectacular story about your impressions, during which the viewer will move around the map along the route you have done and see photos tied to the shooting location. All this with great music, of course. Having spent one effort after the trip to create such an interactive report, you can insert it on your page or blog, send it to all your relatives and publish it on social networks.

ZeeMaps

ZeeMaps provides users with a fast and easy way to create and share interactive maps of the world. With it, you can visualize tracks on the map in KML, KMZ or GeoRSS formats, add your marks and comments. Distinctive feature This service is the ability to work with tabular data. So, if you have a table with the coordinates of the desired points or, for example, the addresses of your customers, then you can feed this data to ZeeMaps, and it will accurately map it.

All maps are stored on the servers of the service and can be accessed at any time via a unique link. In addition, it is possible to print the map, save it as an image and get an html code to embed in a website or blog.

tripgeo

This service is interesting because it allows you not only to lay a track on the map, but also to see how it will look in reality. TripGeo uses data from Google Maps and Google Street View and combines them in one interface, allowing you to take a virtual trip along the chosen route.

You will need to indicate the start and finish points, as well as the desired mode of transportation (car, bicycle, on foot). In addition, you should specify a few more parameters regarding the rendering speed and image scale, after which TripGeo will select the optimal trajectory for you and immediately create a special widget in which the lower part will display a map, and the upper part will show a real view of this place. You just have to click on the Play button and go on a journey.

The TripGeo service can do a good job not only in preparing a trip, allowing you to more accurately find out information about the area, but also if you need a detailed explanation, for example, for guests of the city, driving directions. Now you do not have to explain by phone the signs of the street you need to turn into, you just send a link to the route created in TripGeo, and the person will definitely reach the destination.

The QuickMaps service fully justifies its name: you can make a map here as quickly as possible. To do this, you do not even need to register - just come up with a name for the card, short description and you can get down to business.

Although at first glance it may seem that there are not so many tools here, in fact, everything you need is present. You can mark tracks with straight lines or freehand drawing, make text marks, import KML or GPX files from the web and upload them from your computer. And in terms of various markers, QuickMaps can give odds to much more serious services.

Map constructor (Yandex)

This service is part of the Yandex.Maps project and draws information, of course, from there. In very many cases, especially when it comes to the territory of Ukraine or Russia, these data can be even more accurate and detailed than those of foreign competitors. The map constructor allows you to draw a route, measure distances, draw polygons, put points on the map section you need. Markers here can only be of one type, but each can be accompanied by a number and a comment that will appear when you click on a point.

You can save the finished map and immediately get a code to insert into your website or blog. Service capabilities are best suited for creating interactive maps, showing, for example, the location of your business or store, a driving route, or a gathering point for a social event.

Animaps

As the creators of the service hint to us in its name, it serves to create animated maps. With it, you can create a real multimedia presentation, where, according to the scenario you set, routes will be drawn, markers will appear and disappear, photos and even videos will be shown at the right points. To evaluate the capabilities of the service, it is best to look at one of the maps created by its forces.

The main feature of this service is that you can use it to accurately display not only the events that happened to you on the way, but also the temporal dynamics of the trip. Thus, Animaps is probably the most suitable service for creating an interactive report, after looking at which everyone will receive comprehensive information about your trip.

Bing Maps

Mapping service Bing Maps has long been somewhat in the shadow of its main competitor. And completely in vain - after the beginning of the friendship between Microsoft and Nokia, this service began to use data from Nokia Maps, which have always been distinguished by good coverage and excellent detail.

As part of Bing Maps, the user receives only a minimum of functions necessary to build a map, namely the placement of markers, drawing tracks and polygons with various types of lines, adding photos and comments.

To demonstrate the finished map, you need to save it, after which you can get a direct link to the map and a code for embedding in any web page.

Conclusion

In this article, we reviewed ten services designed to create, edit, and publish custom maps. All of them have their own characteristics and different functionality, so choosing the best one depends heavily on the tasks you are facing. If you just need to make a location map for the site, then the easiest and most convenient way is to use the Map Constructor from Yandex or QuickMaps. If you need to make an informative report about your trip, it is better to pay attention to Tripline and Animaps, which allow you not only to link photos and videos to the track, but also wrap it all in a spectacular shell. Well, for really serious work with maps, you should use Scribble Maps or Open Street Map, which have very rich functionality.
