Just a year ago, we rejoiced wildly when id Software described their future in very correct words. doom. Guns, gore, rhythm - exactly what was expected from that game, and it was very nice to realize that the developers understand this.

Now, at QuakeCon 2016, they talk about the new part Quake, subtitled Champions. And again, the very words that are expected of them.

Key word: speed

As wild as the relaunched Doom was, it was still accused from time to time of the "doom-marine" running slower. It is clear why the pace has slowed down - in early Doom and Quake it would have been fundamentally impossible to aim with a gamepad, and the new game has nevertheless adapted to all current platforms.

But Quake Champions will be exclusive to PC. And the very first word that sounded at the presentation was “speed”. Watch the gameplay video. Compare the novelty with any shooter with console roots. Yes, that's the pace Quake 2 and 3 were played at. And that's the pace Quake Champions will be played at.

This is the most classic arena multiplayer shooter. With weapons appearing on the map strictly according to the timing. With a complex and intricate level structure, where the advantage is the one who has studied all the corners and outlined all the routes in advance. With rocketjumps, finally - a jump on a rocket explosion here throws up a good seven floors. And there is jumping, and strafjumping. Almost all of the advanced movement techniques you learned fifteen years ago should be used in Quake Champions.

id, as the developers say, has many projects, but few people, so the main work on Champions is done in New York-Petersburg Saber Interactive. But this does not mean that the development was given to them at the mercy of the whole.

Now there are heroes here too

The main innovation regarding Quake 3 ( Quake 4 and Enemy Territory we don’t take it into account, they are good, but too ... different) that heroes and skills appeared. The division into classes here is not as rigid as in Overwatch, where each has one gun and a bunch of skills. In Champions, you use any weapon that you can find on the map, just in addition, each hero has a nice bonus that can help in battle and partly change the style of combat.

The heroes themselves are familiar to us, it's just that in Quake 3: Arena they were strictly decorative images, but here they gained their abilities. For example, Visor can from time to time highlight the silhouettes of enemies through walls, and Nyx (we assume that a relative of Mynx from the third part) becomes invisible and invulnerable for a few seconds, hiding from enemy fire.

In total, a dozen heroes are expected at the start. Then there will be more of them, although here, of course, there is a difficulty in maintaining a balance.

Ranger teleports short distances (remember the translocator from Unreal Tournament), the Scale Bearer accelerates and blows everyone in its path, tearing to shreds (like a bull in a bullfight or, if you like, the Juggernaut from the X-Men). The lizardman Skorlagg is slightly more survivable than the others, and can spit acid, leaving puddle traps. Familiar from the third part of Anarky is accelerating, newcomer Galina places strengthening or slowing down totems, and so on.

At the same time, many skills operate on the principle of "rock-paper-scissors". If the overclocked Scalebearer runs to Minx, and she suddenly disincarnates, he will simply run through and get shot in the back. But against Vaysor, the trick is useless: if he enlightens the surroundings, he will see the invisible. Skills are recharged in thirty to forty seconds, depending on the character, and the only way this is to speed up - collect bonuses in the form of an hourglass on the map.

Cannons - you've already seen them

Development lead Tim Willits specifically draws our attention to the fact that abilities are like another set of guns that you can experiment with. All heroes are geared towards combat - no "tanks" or healers.

As for weapons, here we get a wild combination of the arsenals of the first and third Quake. For the most part, however, this is a proven set of Q3: assault rifle, shotgun, lightning gun, railgun, glove with circular saws, rocket launcher. From the first part, only a nail gun was taken: it is more powerful than a machine gun, but the bullets do not reach the target instantly, you need to calculate the lead.

What fate befell the grenade launcher, plasma gun and, most importantly, the BFG, is not known. Or rather, the developers, of course, know, but do not say yet.

How Quake Champions will be distributed (for a fee? for free? with a subscription?) is not mentioned at id. They don't know yet. The game is definitely due out next year, and the developers are confident that they will be able to shake up the online competitive shooter genre. Things like lawbreakers suspiciously cheerfully striving for the same niche, but still, it was with Quake that esports began at one time.

And it would be time for the veteran to return to it.

The largest block of the exhibition was assigned to the sequel Dishonored: it is understandable, because the game already looks phenomenal and cool. So the new city is called Cornaco, storyline can be completed in two ways: playing as Corvo Attano or as Emily Kaldwin.

The gameplay trailer blows the tower: the atmosphere of the original in a pleasant combination with fresh architecture and an original story. Emily has a bunch of powerful abilities, like hypnosis on people and dogs or mass techniques for a large number of opponents.

They promise well-developed chips from Corvo, as well as a skill development tree that can be managed in a more variable manner.

The release is scheduled for November 11 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. At the same time, a collector's edition with a canonical mask will appear on sale.

The first gameplay video of Prey 2 was shown to journalists the day before the start of QuakeCon 2016. This time, the developers showed the ability of Corvo. Some of them are already familiar to us from the first part, but they work in Dishonored 2 a little differently. When choosing the ability "Transfer" (Blink), Corvo is now able to not only move, but also immediately attack the enemy. Bend Time allows you to slow down time. The Possession ability will help you quickly leave the battlefield, turning into a wasp. Other novelties will allow you to scatter the surrounding enemies (Windblast) and unleash swarms of rats on the enemy (Devouring Swarm).

Corvo was shown how to complete the level in an aggressive style, but players can also choose to stealthily pass. In addition, it will be possible to complete tasks in completely different ways. At the end of the presentation, Corvo had two goals to choose from: destroy Viceroy Byrne or Paolo. At E3 2016, Emily chose the first scenario, while at QuakeCon 2016, Corvo hunted for Paolo. It is possible that, despite the closeness of the presentation, a new recording of the gameplay will soon be on the Web. Dishonored 2 will release on November 11, 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

A lot of attention at QuakeCon 2016 was paid to the new part of Quake. Not everyone will remember now that esports appeared as a phenomenon after the first Quake tournaments in the 90s. In recent years, Quake has fallen into disrepair, and with the rise of MOBAs, dueling shooters have become a bit lost. With the release of Quake Champions, everything can change. id Software has already stated that they are ready to hold championships and invest heavily in popularizing the game. With the right combination of circumstances, Quake Champions is quite capable of attracting the interest of young players as well.

In Quake Champions, we again have to make quick decisions, constantly move and shoot accurately in order to survive. But there will be no pure old school: the developers had to make some compromises. Character classes will appear in the new game. Each character will have their own unique skills and abilities. Ranger, better known as QuakeGuy from the original Quake, can throw a teleporter that allows you to escape from a dangerous situation. Introduced in Quake III Arena, the character Visor will be able to see through walls. Nyx is endowed with the Ghost Walk skill, upon activation of which the character becomes invisible for a while. Another newcomer, Scale Bearer, is endowed with the Bull Rush skill, which will instantly reduce the distance to the target. Anarki, another familiar character from Quake III Arena, will be able to move around the map a little faster than other heroes.

It remains to be seen if Quake will follow the path of Overwatch. Class skills and abilities, according to id, only affect the style of the game (although there will be even more of them in the future). Otherwise, all heroes will pick up the same weapon scattered around the map. In the video, you can see cannons recognizable from other parts. After the introduction of "loadouts" in DOOM 4, there were concerns that there would be a similar feature in the new Quake. But here the developers remained true to the old principles.

It is already known that the starting weapons in Quake Champions, as well as in Quake III Arena, will be Machine Gun and Buzz Saw Gauntlet (machine gun and glove with a saw). In addition, the following barrels have been confirmed - Shotgun, Nail Gun, Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun and Rail Gun. The gameplay video also showed a few seconds of jumping - the familiar strafejump and the circlejump from QuakeWorld. Rocketjumps (jumping with rockets) showed even more.

Compact levels, dynamic gameplay, modern graphics and recognizable from other parts game process. What else is needed for happiness? Probably only one thing - that the developers take into account their previous mistakes and continue to support Quake Champions after the release of the game. One QuakeCon is clearly not enough to popularize games from id Software. We need intrusive advertising, tournaments and constant work with the community.

First DOOM 4 DLC - Unto the Evil

The first paid expansion for DOOM 4 was released at QuakeCon 2016 - Unto the Evil. This add-on is for network game. Players received three cards for multiplayer battles - "Ritual", "Cataclysm" and "Offering", one new demon to play as, a new weapon - an EMG pistol with an alternative type of shooting in the form of powerful accumulated charges, armor sets, hacking modules and ridicule. id Software revealingly continues to support DOOM multiplayer, while not promoting the game in eSports. Apparently, if the developers do not announce eSports support for the game separately, as in the case of Quake Champions, then it is not worth waiting for. Even at QuakeCon there was no DOOM tournament - more proven disciplines were chosen for the competition.

QuakeCon remains the only major tournament where Quake is still featured. The strongest players on the planet every summer put aside all their business to come to the USA and play at the oldest championship. Despite the absence of Anton "Cooller" Singov and Alexei "Cypher" Yanushevsky, who could have graced the championship with their presence, our fans had someone to worry about. Sergey "Evil" Orekhov seriously claimed a high place and was the main rival of the four-time QuakeCon champion - Shane "rapha" Hendrickson. The American had a great chance to become the most titled player in the history of the tournament; his age-old opponent Cypher, who won QuakeCon four times, was absent this time.

Like all the favorites, Evil easily made it to the playoffs, where he passed two Australians - the legendary python and Fraze, but in the finals of the winners he could not oppose Rafa. The American's style of play is geared towards constant pressure, which the Russian player could not handle. Evil made several hurtful mistakes and lost outright on three cards. After the defeat, the Russian player did not lose heart and in the very next match did not leave a stone unturned from k1llsen, who defeated Spart1e in the losers semi-finals, and outplayed the three-time world champion Zero4 in the first losers final (albeit more than a decade ago). There is one more chance to get even with the offender and take revenge for the defeat in the Grand Finals of QuakeCon 2015.

The current favorites will have to prove their worth from scratch.

QuakeWorld: 19 years later

In addition to the Quake Live duel, QuakeCon hosted a 2x2 QuakeWorld tournament. It's hard to believe, but in fact it was only the second QW tournament in the history of the festival since 1997. Prior to this, QW was introduced at QuakeCon 2007, when a special tournament was held for all parts of Quake at the same time. The competition could not be called amateur: a lot of eminent players showed up in Dallas, many of whom had not seen each other for years. First place was awarded $12,000, a sum unheard of in the ancient discipline. The whole pedestal was occupied by the Scandinavians: the Swedes - carapace/LocKtar and bps/Locust took silver and bronze, and the Scandinavian mix Ragnarok won. NEW CHAMPION: ATHENA

Athena was one of the first to join the SOZ to take revenge on the Strogg who invaded Earth. The expeditionary force in which she fought fell into a trap, and she managed to escape only after the destruction of the Wormhole generator. Her escape pod was thrown into the arenas of the Dream World. Now she uses her hook and performs marvels of aerial acrobatics to achieve air supremacy and attacks enemies from the sky.

Everything is the same as before, but this time with a TEAM OF FAITHFUL FRIENDS! Armor and health are still on the map. This mode is a great opportunity to practice combos!

CHASING THE LEADER

  • In this version of the Onslaught, everyone plays as a Scalebearer, and the skill "Rush!" kills enemies with one hit. That is, in fact, every player here is an armored train that must shoot down ... other armored trains.

SWING

  • Do you like dance and music of the fifties? Well, it's a slightly different swing. In this version of the Carnage, everyone plays as Athena, and a direct hit with a hook instantly kills the opponent. Everyone is jumping, spinning, swinging, so, yes, in a way, it really feels like swing.

OBELISK

  • Remember "Obelisk"? In general, this is it, only here we have reduced the time limit from two and a half minutes to one minute!

NEW WEAPON SKIN: « Destroyer» Army "Destroyer" - best friend space marines, who managed to prove his effectiveness in various parts of the galaxy. Stitches enemies like paper.

This update includes a number of general improvements:

The new game has been named Quake Champions. The person who wrote the code for the original game came on stage and talked about the continuation of the multiplayer arena. According to him, the main element of Quake has always been the speed of movement and the rapid dynamics of what is happening. new game promised to do true to the roots of the series, including maintaining the incredible dynamics and speed.

Quake Champions will challenge the most notorious esports players, but will also be of interest to ordinary players.
