A few days ago, the Japanese company Nintendo released a miniature modern version of its 8-bit retro console. Now Sega is making a similar move. The company has revived its console in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog gaming franchise. Moreover, two versions of the set-top box are presented at once - the usual (small, in comparison with the original, size) and portable.

The first version of the console works with original Mega Drive cartridges. It comes with wireless controllers and a system for connecting the set-top box to the TV.


The portable version is equipped with a 3.2-inch display. Inside is a battery that can be charged using a regular USB data cable.

Both consoles come with 80 built-in games, including the most popular Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Golden Ax and Comix Zone. That is, you can play immediately after turning on the console. If you want other games, you can download the ROM to an SD card and play on the portable version.

The consoles are priced at $65 and will be available in October.

    • SEGA is about to release a new model of the Mega Drive game console for two players, as well as a portable game console calculated for one. The production of these devices under the SEGA license will be handled by the Chinese company At Games, which has previously produced various retro consoles.

    The new SEGA console supports original Mega Drive cartridges, has two game controllers and connects to a monitor or TV via an HDMI port.

    The Mega Drive Portable is equipped with a 3.2-inch screen, an ergonomic body with a built-in gamepad and is recharged using a standard charger via a USB cable.


    Notably, both devices have eighty classic games released by SEGA over the past decades, including hits like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, Golden Ax and Comix Zone. You can run these games without cartridges and completely free - just buy a console, connect it to a TV and turn it on (in the case of portable set-top box TV, of course, is superfluous).

    Both devices will cost $65. In which countries they will be sold is unknown, but it is unlikely that SEGA will release them in large numbers, so they may soon become collector's rarities. Some stores are already accepting pre-orders for these consoles, and they will be available in October 2016.

    According to SEGA, the release of these devices will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the game Sonic the Hedgehog, but we suspect that the company would not have announced them if not for the success of Nintendo's Pokémon. pokemon game GO has shown that there is a huge demand for game characters invented several decades ago. Last week, Nintendo also released a new game console - NES Classic Edition. It's coming November 11 (one month after the SEGA console), priced at $60, comes with just one controller (an extra one costs $10), and only 30 games come pre-installed. As you can see, in the virtual war of unreleased retro consoles, SEGA is winning so far.

    For the spring of 2017, SEGA has planned two high-profile releases: Sonic Mania and another unnamed Sonic the Hedgehog game will appear on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Judging by the trailer, Sonic Mania will be a 2D platform game with nostalgic pixel art, classic gameplay and familiar characters. The game is being developed jointly by the American division of SEGA and PagodaWest Games.

    The retrospective, growing into mass nostalgia for things from the past, encourages manufacturers to release once-cult models in an updated version or even take on the production of original devices. The creators of the legendary “set-top box” Sega Mega Drive, which was the most desired gift for many teenagers of the 90s, announced their intentions to re-release the console with minor technical improvements. True, the novelty will most likely enter the market in a limited edition, so Sega fans should not count on the mass character of this product.

    In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, introduced in 1991 and contributing to the unprecedented popularity of both the Mega Drive console itself and the main character of the arcade in the face blue hedgehog named Sonic, Sega management is preparing two new products at once. The first will be the Sega Mega Drive mentioned above for home use, and the second will be its portable version.

    Both devices will be manufactured by the Chinese firm At Games, which specializes in the designated area and has chalked up several successfully reproduced retro consoles. The main "feature" of the updated version of the Mega Drive, which Sega focuses on, will be support for the original cartridges used with the console a quarter of a century ago. Such a device will be connected to the TV panel through an already modern HDMI interface, and to control virtual heroes it will be equipped with two wireless gamepads.

    As for the portable game console, it will be equipped with a 3.2-inch screen, familiar controls. The ability to charge the built-in battery here will be implemented via a micro-USB↔USB cable. It is noteworthy that the consoles will be delivered with eighty already "pre-installed" games. To run new game content on a portable system, simply copy the distribution kit to microSD card, install it in the appropriate slot and thus transfer it 25 years ago.
