How to craft in Metro Exodus

There are two ways to craft items: you can open your backpack at any time, or you can interact with the workbench. Just two crafting components

There are only two crafting components: materials, represented by a gear icon, and chemicals, represented by a chemical flask. You don't have to worry about the difference between the two, because most recipes call for a bit of both, and you'll find them in roughly equal amounts.

Where to find crafting components

You won't be able to miss them. They lie on shelves in buildings, on corpses in the middle of the road, around abandoned campfires - you'll find them anywhere that looks even remotely interesting.

However, they can be difficult to distinguish from other objects because they can look like old trash, so it's best to just look around for any likely locations. If the object can be assembled, you will be prompted to pick it up, which will give you between 1 and 10 components. It's hard to tell if you'll get materials or chemicals (or both) just by looking at the item ahead of time.

There are also special types of containers that you should always look for, and they will always have components, these are: small blue boxes and lockers that you can open.

There are almost always materials on corpses, so make sure you loot any enemies you kill. Don't try to loot monster corpses - you won't get any resources from them.

You should also inspect the weapons of the dead enemies. If there's ammo or upgrades there, you can pick them up, but if it's a duplicate of what you already have, you'll get components instead, which is very handy.

As a last resort, you can dismantle consumables into crafting components. You only get around 20% of the item's value, so only do this if you're desperate. It's usually more efficient to just explore the location.

What is preferable to craft

If you have a small resource pool (say less than 100 of each component), you should prioritize. First aid kits are extremely important. If you are in an area where you need to wear a gas mask, make sure you also have spare filters or you could die. It's good that you can make them from your backpack.

In the backpack you can only make ammo for your airgun. This ammo is cheap to make, but I would only recommend it if you're running out of ammo on your two main cannons, which are probably more powerful than the Tikhar. If you are well stocked with medkits and ammo, then save your resources because chances are you will need to make more medkits at some point.

  • To save on ammo, take headshots - you'll kill enemies immediately, compared to four or five body shots.
  • Avoid falling damage. Don't jump from anything if you're not sure, because you'll need to spend a first aid kit.
  • If you're low on ammo, take a stealthy approach and conserve ammo. It's also safer, which means you'll use fewer first aid kits.
  • Save throwable items. Generally, you won't need them in gunfights, and you'll want to save them up for random mini-boss fights in Metro Exodus. Molotovs will be especially useful.
  • Move faster in places with poisonous gases. You'll likely have five minutes or less before you start to choke, so don't linger.

How to improve equipment

You can improve your equipment - body armor, gas mask, helmet, etc. - at the workplace. This does not cost resources, but first you need to find specific parts to improve in the game world.
