Publisher Working Designs. The original American name was Detonator Gauntlet(rus. "Gauntlet Detonator"), but because of the similarity with the existing Gauntlet the name had to be changed to Vanguard Bandits. As a bonus, the game came with a CD with a demo version of the game. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. The video game is made in a medieval environment, but the battles are fought on huge robots - "ATAKAH"(English ATAC).

Action Vanguard Bandits takes place on the continent of Eptina (eng. Eptina), where wars are constantly fought between different kingdoms. Main character games - a young man named Bastion (eng. Bastion), in the original - Randy, ランディ), who was raised by a strict and domineering soldier named Kamorj, a former bodyguard of the king. Bastion has learned to control ATTACK since childhood. He himself dreams of becoming a warrior and fighting against the Unaris empire. The Imperials have been after him and his father since Bastion can remember.

Game process

Vanguard Bandits- tactical role-playing game, the action of which takes place on an isometric map divided into equal squares. The player controls a squad of several people, fighting against a group of enemy ATTACKS - a similar system resembles Final Fantasy Tactics and games of the series Front Mission. The battle takes place in turn-based mode; each character can move, attack an opponent, or use support abilities on their turn. Any action spends a certain number of action points (eng. AP, Action points), in addition, the use of attacks increases the number of fatigue points (eng. FP, faint points). If the FP value reaches 100, then the character is temporarily unable to perform any actions and takes more damage from opponents. When a hero attacks or defends, he and his opponent are transported to a separate 3D "battlefield" where they each perform their chosen action. However, the battle animation can be turned off - in this case, the player will see only the result of the battle (the number of lost health points). After the completion of the battle, which is called a mission, there is usually a dialogue between the characters and further development storyline. Before starting the next mission, the player can check the status of his squad, talk to several characters, change ATTACK equipment, or visit the store (during certain parts of the game).

The game consists of 56 missions and has five different storylines.

Plot

The game begins with an attack by Imperial ATTACKS on the village where Bastion and Camorge live. Further developments vary depending on the actions of the player. The first and most simple storyline conditionally called "royal", the second, with a large number of turns and branches, is "imperial"; the third, and most difficult, is the “ruins” branch. The choice of branch may depend directly on the answer to questions, analysis of the level of the protagonist or the state of love of the heroines for Bastion ("imperial branch"). "Royal" plot Vanguard Bandits has two endings, good or bad (if the Bastion is below a certain level), the "imperial" scenario also has two endings ( love line with Sadira or Cecilia). "Ruins" have one end.

ATTACKS

ATTACKS ( ATAC) are huge robots that look like iron knights, controlled by people. According to the plot Vanguard Bandits, these gigantic machines were found in the ruins of a lost civilization. After the discovery of prototypes, mass production of ATTACKS for military needs began on their basis. However, in terms of power, they cannot cope with the original ATTACKS, which are controlled by the rulers of the states and the best warriors of the continent. The most powerful ATTACK is the legendary Lost Ultra Shooter ( ultra gunner).

All ATAS-i are divided into 6 types:

  • Infantry (infantry) - otherwise called "regular" ATAC, which are quite mobile. Severely loses mobility in deserts, snowy areas and rocky terrain. This type includes most ATACs, including Ultra Gunners.
  • light infantry (Light Infantry) - More mobile than most ATACs, but less armored. This type includes: Dantarius, Flaros and Sarbelas of Prince Dyer.
  • Heavy Infantry (Heavy Infantry) are slower and less mobile than most ATACs, but also with higher endurance and attack than most ATACs. This type includes: Sharking, Duke Radkot's Bahamut, Roaring Lion of the Marquis Dionne, Zulvarn.
  • Cavalry (Cavalry) are very fast on normal terrain, but slow on everything else, especially in conditions like snow or sand. Duke Zeira's Toreador belongs to this type.
  • Ninja (Ninja) - nimble, with strong attacks, and very fast moving in all terrains, but with a reduced defense indicator. This type includes Vedokorban and the secret development of Madoc No. 69.
  • Volatile (flight) - Possesses excellent mobility, as wings are built into this type, they hover above the ground, and this is what distinguishes them from other types. This type includes: Korbelan, Princess Sadira's Sylph, and Waiban of the traitor Ganlon.

Countries

Vanguard Bandits focuses on the interactions between countries and people on the Eptina Continent. Seven countries are involved in the conflict:

  • Kingdom of Farastia, also simply "Kingdom", are the remnants of a once great army whose fighters fight to restore Farastia to its former glory. Allied with the Principality of Avalon. Formally, the storyline for the Kingdom is depicted as positive. The Kingdom was involved in a long-standing war with the Empire, which conquered part of the Kingdom, including its capital.
  • Unaris Empire (Junaris) - was formed by Emperor Degall, who opposed the war for territories. However, Degall was corrupted by the power he had gained. His army, led by the calculating General Faulkner, and the Empire as a whole is positioned as an evil, antagonistic element in the game. The army in particular is often associated with pillaging and pillaging innocent cities, even their own (although the Kingdom, it turns out, is also seen in such atrocities).
  • Principality of Avalon- this small country was formed by Duke Zeira and is located in difficult situation. Avalon supports the Kingdom, but at the same time is busy with its own conflict with the country of Muspel to the south.
  • nordilia (nordilian forest) - big country rich in vast forests. Ruled by the brutal warrior Duke Logan. He allies with the Empire, believing that he is using it to his advantage. Is in conflict with the Duchy of Hibernia.
  • Maspel (Muspel Nation) - a country in the desert, which is enriched using its resources and raw materials. Although he claims to be neutral, he constantly attacks Avalon and is secretly allied with the Empire. Considered poor by most nations, while its despotic, treacherous leader, the Duke of Redcott, lives in his own palace, thwarting any attempt at rebellion.
  • Duchy of Hibernia is a snow-covered country in the north ruled by a man known as Lord Alden "The Ice Wolf". Initially, Hibernia was created by King Pharastia, who carved off part of his territory and gave it to one of his brothers. The purpose of Hibernia is to keep an eye on events in the Kingdom and, if necessary, intervene. At the start of the game, Hibernia is not involved in the conflict, although this eventually leads to war with the Empire.
  • Dionne Lion, Dionne Lion (Dionne-Lehve) - this country is ruled by mercenary warriors who are ready to provide their services to any side. While they don't have any formal alliances at the start of the game, they are at war with the Empire. Their leader, the Marquis of Dionne, is one of the most powerful and powerful warriors on the continent.

Game characters

Main characters

  • Prince Bastion- The long lost Prince of the Kingdom, the protagonist of the game. When the Empire captured the capital of the Kingdom, Alugard fled with Bastion (then just a child) and raised him as his son, teaching him the art of battle. At the age of sixteen, Bastion returns to become the leader of the Kingdom's fight against the Empire. At the beginning of the game, Alba controls the ATAC-th, inherited from Alugard, in the course of the game he changes to the legendary Ultra Shooter or TIK-TAK, depending on the storyline.
  • Princess Sadira is a beautiful princess of the Empire and Dwyer's sister, one of Bastion's possible romantic interests. Impulsive, follows the principle of "action first, talk later" in relation to hostility and injustice. Conflicts with General Faulkner. Controls Sylph, a blue ATAC with large wings.
  • General Faulkner- The general of the empire, the antagonist of the game. Faulkner is an evil, conniving man who will do anything to achieve his goals. Embittered against the whole world for the death of his father and other atrocities of the belligerents during the war. Faulkner's father, Savaro, was deceived by Emperor Degall into believing that the Kingdom was responsible for his wife's death. Savaro and the King died fighting each other, the Imperial army entered the capital. Faulkner outwardly shows respect for members of the Imperial Family, exploiting them for his own ends. Initially, he controls Solaris, which he received from his father, but later transplants into the legendary and polar opposite of the Ultra Gunner, the powerful ATAC Zulvarn, or Madoc #69 prototype depending on the storyline.

Minor characters

  • Kamorj (Alugard) Bastion's adoptive father and former bodyguard of King Farastia. He escaped from the burning capital with Bastion on the king's orders, and in order to hide from the empire, he changed his name from Alugard to Camorge. Barazaf controls the ATAC at the start of the game.
  • Milea is Bastion's adoptive sister and a potential romantic interest for the protagonist. Her parents were killed by Imperial forces when she was young, and Camorge, who was a friend of the family, took her in. She cooks and does housework for the Bastion squad. Ultimately, he learns to control the ATAC.
  • Pack Bastion's undersized friend and extremely skilled ATAC mechanic. Wears huge glasses. Has some ability to control ATACs, in particular, captures Zulvarn in one of the scenarios.
  • Galvas- Alugard's older brother and commander of the Kingdom's current forces. Has great self-respect, and dreams of the day when the Kingdom will return to its former glory. Galvas is extremely stubborn and has no sense of humor. Operates Serat's ATAS.
  • Prince Dwyer(Duyere) is the direct heir to the imperial throne. Is a brash, immature, naive and inept commander. General Faulkner uses him as a pawn for his plans. His father, Emperor Degall, the previous ruler of the Unaris empire, was assassinated on Faulkner's orders, leaving his easily influenced Dwyer to ascend the throne. Duyar has a very serious rivalry with his sister, Sadira. He inherited his father's ATAC - Sarbelas.
  • Duke Alden- The gray-haired and pale-skinned ruler of Hibernia. In a constant state of war with Duke Logan. Believes to be the best chess player on the Continent (although in one of the storylines, Milea defeats him in the second game and gets the rights to his ATAC for two weeks). His ATAC is Altagrave. Alden's right-hand man, and the only person the duke trusts implicitly, is the female ATAS pilot Amphysia. Melior. She manages the affairs of Hibernia during Alden's absence.
  • Duke Zeira- Ruler of the Principality of Avalon. Helps the people of the Kingdom in the fight against the Empire, although he left part of the troops to protect the people. His ATAC, Toreador, has the appearance of a centaur.
  • Andrew- one of the main subordinates of the Marquis of Dionne, a ninja, prone to the abuse of alcohol and women. He has great self-confidence regarding his fighting skills and ability to seduce a lady. Manages Vedokarban.
  • Cecilia- A ninja girl who worked under Princess Sadira. Cecilia is a possible romantic interest for Bastion. Also double agent General Faulkner, who uses her to spy on Sadira. Manages Vedokarban.
  • Clare- Duke Logan's daughter with dark red hair. Although she looks like an annoying child, she is actually a strong warrior. Rivals with Sadira since his days at the academy. Manages the Einlager.
  • Barlow- Davlin's bosom friend. An ever-hungry, chubby pilot who often lends comic relief to situations. He claims that he is affected by a lack of iron in the body, which, presumably, gives him an insatiable appetite. Initial ATAS - Ratatoskr.
  • Davlin- A cheeky young man with a strong sense of duty. Hot-tempered, cannot tolerate the shedding of innocent blood. Brother of Meliora. Initial ATAS - Ratatoskr.
  • Marquis Dionne- the ruler of Dionne-Leva, the Marquis of Dionne - a rude old warrior. His family was tasked with guarding Gracia, the stone needed to activate the Ultra Gunner. His ATAC is Roaring Lion.
  • Duke Logan- Ruler of Nordilia. A courageous person, always looking for a fight and very aggressive. Despite this, it can sometimes act extremely vilely. He controls the crimson Crimson ATAC.
  • Franco- One of Sadira's bodyguards, a gentle old man. Franco acts as a father figure to the young princess, as her real father lacks either the time or the desire to be a father. Controls Corbelan.
  • Halak- One of Sadira's bodyguards, a serious elderly woman. Halak is the exact opposite of Franco in how she tries to influence Sadira. While Franco prefers Sadira to learn freely from her own mistakes, Halak prefers to control the young princess. She is the mother of Emperor Degall (and, by extension, the grandmother of Dyer and Sadira). Controls Corbelan.
  • And she- Reina's close friend and comrade. Because of her appearance may be mistaken for a man. Barazaf controls the ATAC at the start of the game. Her father Kaidul, a member of the Avalon Defense Corps, enraged by Avalon's commitment to help the Kingdom, neglecting his own people, launches a coup d'état instigated by Imperial agents. Caidul controls the ATAS of Haizuron.
  • Reina- An energetic girl with blond hair who fights for the Avalon Defense Corps. Khorol controls ATAC at the beginning of the game.
  • Zakov- The brash, incompetent commander of the imperial army. He has a terrible German accent (in the original and English versions) which provides some comic relief. Zakov constantly persuades Madoc to give him the latest developments of ATACs. Initial ATAS - Einlager.
  • Duke Redcott- obese dictator of the country Maspel. He seeks to take over the entire continent, and is ready to work for both the empire and the kingdom, attacking in the back, just to achieve what he wants. He controls the ATAC Bahamut, which has the traits of a dragon.
  • Madoc- designer of many ATACs of the Empire, including Sharkings. He is the grandfather of Puck, Bastion's engineer. Madoc lacks respect for human life, and this is reflected in his ATAC designs, whose main ability was to destroy enemy pilots, not vehicles.
  • Nana Daughter of the Duke of Redcott. Steals his father's ATAC after he is killed by General Faulkner's man. Nana has a quirky pet named Q-Q.
  • Ganlon- The commander of the army of the Kingdom, who betrays his country for the sake of a place in the army of the Empire. He often stutters and stutters. When fighting for the Kingdom, he controls the ATAC Waiban.
  • Shion- Duke Logan's servant, puzzled to take care of Claire. He is a pedantic and professional man with a secret passion for Claire. Rules Rakhabor.
  • Thomson- one of the generals of the Kingdom, hometown - Asa, along with the families of soldiers was captured by Faulkner to force Thomson to cooperate with the Empire. Rules over Haizuron.

It would be highly unfair to blame the first PS for the lack of tactical RPGs, but, as it often happens, only a few of them reached the Western audience (although, it is worth noting, the few are far from the worst). And it seems all the more surprising that the well-known translation group Working Designs drew attention to a rather ordinary at first glance tactics Epica Stella, which did not gain much popularity at home. Be that as it may, WD still published the game in America, where it received the name Vanguard Bandits(in my opinion, more suitable for her than the original) and found, albeit not crazy, but still a success. Of course, some comrades attribute this to the aforementioned lack of tactics on PS1, but is it really that simple? In any case, seemingly so hackneyed and unoriginal VB actually has a whole arsenal of discreet, but no less interesting finds in its storeroom, which we will discuss in the following article.

The plot of VB is similar to the two-faced Janus: on the one hand, its plot is banal to the teeth grinding and overtly pathetic, on the other hand, it is full of humor and mockery of clichés. Yes, yes, you heard right, the creators of the game quite aptly make fun of game stereotypes, and, most importantly, they are able to laugh at themselves, which is especially noticeable in one of the scenarios ... but first things first. So, as a tie-in, we have the good kingdom of Pharastia and the bad empire of Junaris (yes, as you can see, the clichés already start with this). In Farastia lives with his father, the girl Milia and the mechanic boy Puke, a young, proud and brave young man Bastion, who is eager to fight the empire. Such an opportunity is presented when a group of soldiers attack a village. The girls Reina and Ione come to the aid of Bastion, subordinates of a certain Galvas, who owes something to Bastion's father, respectively, to rescue him from imperial captivity and our newly-minted party sets off. I will say right away: in this game there are three very different scenarios (or branches), so further on each will be discussed separately. The main one can be considered the so-called “royal branch”, in which Bastion learns about his true origin (did you really think it was a simple village guy?), leads Farastia, and, having secured the support of several duchies, starts a holy war against the empire and General Faulkner in particular. A word should also be said about Faulkner himself: for a game of this level, this is a surprisingly logical and elaborate villain, with motives quite understandable to the player. Without a doubt, this scenario can be called the most cliche and boring of all, but it is saved by a large amount of humor, as well as bright, memorable characters: the lively optimist Reina, the fat sweet tooth Barlow, the girl Nana in love with Bastion, the quick-tempered handsome Devlin, the charming womanizer Andrew , incredibly correct, and this is why Galvas is so comical. Throughout the game, they will interact with each other, creating a field for many jokes, and even such serious characters as the Dukes of Zeira and Alden have to periodically try on comic roles. There are two endings for this scenario: bad and good, which will depend on how often the characters died on the battlefield, and how often you talk to them between fights. The empire branch is a look at the same story from the other side, where you have to fight against those who might otherwise be your ally. Here, Bastion joins the princess of the empire, Sadira, who suspects something is wrong with Faulkner, and here you can observe the dualism of the game: the empire here is not at all an absolute evil, and Farastia also has something to be ashamed of. By the way, there are also two endings here, which depend on which of the girls you preferred during the game: Sadira or the cute mechanic (although she is not at all so simple) Cecilia. And finally, the so-called branch of the ruins, which can only be opened if you have completed the royal scenario with a good ending, and it is not surprising, because this is essentially an undisguised banter over it, the essence of which is difficult to retell to a person who has not played. Let me just say that it is really funny, believe me.

As for the combat system, it is simple and uncomplicated as a potato. Here we have turn-based combat and giant robots (somewhat strange looking in a medieval setting) that are provided by ATAS. Actually, each ATAS has its own characteristics, so if some specialize in brute force, then others are more dexterous, and so on. In addition, ATAS are divided into those that can be changed between characters (and upgrade their equipment), and those that belong to a specific hero. By the way, upon reaching a new level, you are given three points to improve your performance, and this is done manually, which personally pleased me very much. The attacks themselves are of different types: strong, but not accurate, and vice versa (although some still combine these qualities), as well as long-range. Unlike many other tactics, in VB there is no stupid retaliatory counterattack, here you (and your opponent) can choose how you behave when attacked: actually counterattack, defend or try to dodge (risk, but worth it in some cases). It is also very important here which side the attack comes from - the most successful option is, of course, from behind: you cannot defend and counterattack from it. Another interesting feature is the fp parameter, which is unusual for other RPGs, which means the level of panic during an attack. Actually, it is spent on all your actions, whether it be during your or an enemy attack, and if fp reaches 100, you will no longer be able to defend and dodge, and you can only hope for luck. All together, this makes you still think over tactics, but still, the game remains extremely simple and fast to complete. As for activities outside of battles, it comes down to occasional shopping in stores and interviews with characters.

Graphically, the game is so-so: the main perspective does not look very good, it is typical for games of this genre and does not represent anything interesting. The 3D one-on-one fights look a lot better already, and although it's hard for me to say anything about the design of the mech, it looks very decent. Scenes outside of battles are also uninteresting, and can only please a really large number of portraits on a brother. Separately, I would like to note a very decent anime video at the very beginning.
There is not much music, and its quality leaves much to be desired. Although it is difficult to find fault with the melodies themselves, they do not irritate the ear, but nevertheless they can quickly get bored, which, however, cannot be put in minus the composer. Oh, and don't forget the amazing female vocal track playing on the title screen.

Conclusion? In fact, it's hard for me to say something definite, it's not must have or something like that, but if you are attracted to everything that is written above, then it is definitely worth a try. And in any case: even those who are not imbued with the game itself can simply play a short and simple tactic, and it is quite possible that they will enjoy it.

Game description

Vanguard Bandits is a tactical RPG in a setting that combines mecha with medieval fantasy, in the domestic environment also known by the incorrect nickname "Crusaders". The player's squad controls mechs in the form of huge knightly armor, called ATAC "s (All Terrain Armored Combatant). Mechs are armed with swords, spears, axes and similar classic weapons that match their size. In addition to normal physical attacks, mechs can use the magic of one of six elements due to the power of their power sources - precious stones.

Plot

The role of the central protagonist is played by a fifteen-year-old boy named Bastion, whose history and important mission you will learn during the game. Bastion lived with his father and friends in a village that one day found itself on the front line of two warring states, which forced them to leave it. In his journey through the world, Bastion will find new friends and allies, meet his love, and, Maybe, will be able to defeat his sworn enemy.

By behavior in battles and answers in dialogues, you choose one of two branches of the plot - playing for the Kingdom or for the Empire, one "good" and "bad" ending for each, as well as a strange third branch, which opens after completing both main ones, in which Bastion decides to take the position of an anti-hero. The game is never boring due to the presence of humor, colorful characters, a cozy atmosphere and kind ridicule of clichés like fairytale games, which is especially abundant in the aforementioned branch of the Ruins.

Gameplay

Vanguard Bandits features an isometric view, 3D locations, and 2D character sprites. The gameplay is familiar to the genre: story scenes on the game engine are interspersed with protracted TRPG battles.

During battles, first all your units go in turn, then all enemy units, and so on. Every time an attack is made on the battlefield, the screen will switch to 3D view, which demonstrates it quite beautifully. You can disable these animations if you wish. Before each attack, you must calculate your strength, comparing the power and chances of hitting different types of attacks with your target. Saving the game during missions is not provided, so you often have to take risks and lose. It must be remembered that movement and attacks consume mech energy, which is not replenished as quickly as we would like. When attacked by an enemy, you can choose one of several actions: retaliate, block - guaranteed to take damage, but in a reduced amount - or try to dodge - the risk of getting all or nothing. When you don't have the strength or ability to retaliate, you just silently take damage. All this is true for your opponents too, so it makes sense to first use light attacks that take away energy from enemies, and then break their immobilized mechs without risk to yourself.

As you gain experience, you develop the characteristics of mechs and increase your chances of success, although, of course, your opponents also become stronger. Mechs can also be upgraded by purchasing new weapons, accessories, and more powerful gems in stores. The mechs themselves cannot be bought or sold: they only come (and sometimes leave) with the pilots, although they can be swapped with each other. There are several unique mechs that can only be controlled by certain heroes.

Music

The soundtrack of the game is a set of simple but pleasant 16-bit melodies, complemented by a couple of beautiful songs, one of which can be heard in the opening, and the other in the main menu.
